|First album from one of the metal's best bands. They were so ahead of their time that they're just gaining some influence now, in 2003. This album is not quite as advanced as their later ones, but still demolishes 99.9% of all the other bands in metal. Already they had jazz influences and lots of complexity. The bass is possibly the most innovative element-- not only can you actually hear it, which is pretty rare in metal, but it does its own thing, adding a whole new element to the music. This album is interesting, because you can see the band trying out various influences-- jazz, classical, there's even a goth-sounding track-- and deciding which works best. I can't listen to this kind of stuff all the time, only when I can devote all my attention to it, but it's in my top ten (along with Atheist's other albums, of course).
