Im looking at buying a new guitar, but its made of agathis, i mostly perfer mahogany. Is agathis less dense then mohog?

toggletoggle post by litacore   at Dec 7,2004 10:08am
I think it's supposed to be lighter? (as in, less heavy)

slightly lighter guitars are good because they won't break your back if you play it for more than an hour, as long as its not a cheap piece of shit of course...

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Dec 7,2004 12:34pm
agathis is the retard term for 'plywood'
its a nice way of saying, this guitar is the cheapest crap we can make.
any agathis guitar is inferior.

Hi it's me Hoser posting anonymously...sorry.

Ya Agathis is just like press board plywood. It's like a bunch of pressed shit pounded together. NOT a good tone wood.

toggletoggle post by paganmegan   at Dec 7,2004 1:40pm
ick, what guitars specifically are made from it?

toggletoggle post by litacore   at Dec 7,2004 1:58pm
I've found most non-custom, consumer level guitars heh-heh, well...PRIDE themselves on using Agathis

toggletoggle post by paganmegan   at Dec 7,2004 2:00pm
ohhhh well that blows... why would they pride themselves on being gay and cheap?

toggletoggle post by litacore   at Dec 7,2004 2:02pm
*shrugs*

toggletoggle post by paganmegan   at Dec 7,2004 2:08pm
I wonder what my guitars are made of.... too bad I don't normally pay attention to such things as the type of wood my guitar is made of, I am going to start being more mindful of this shit

toggletoggle post by litacore   at Dec 7,2004 2:11pm
hahaha, these techie boys will think circles around us on this kinda stuff

I am really good at parallel parking though!

toggletoggle post by paganmegan   at Dec 7,2004 2:14pm
I can play my fuckin guitar but the" techie boys" definitely know more about that kind of shit... I'll learn though, I'm getting more interested in that kind of shit now

pretty much all main brands make guitars from agathis, and they are the cheaper models. Basically safe to say, anything under $300 new, is most likely agathis.
what guitars do you have?

toggletoggle post by Aegathis nli at Dec 7,2004 3:09pm
Agathis and Aegathis, no relation

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Dec 7,2004 3:12pm
but they are both cheap and gay

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Dec 7,2004 3:12pm

i didn't reply because i don't know anything about it

toggletoggle post by paganmegan   at Dec 7,2004 3:12pm

I should have cought this thread sooner.
The VAST majority of budget guitars will be alder or poplar
Agathis is never laminated as ply wood (plywood- compact layers of budget wood) and is not, it's an exotic hardwood just like any other guitar wood (maple, rosewood, chocabolo, bloodwood, koa, korina, wenge, ovangkol, poplar, ect) it's a hardwood and on cheaper imports, they make in in a sortof particle board form out of a big piece of mut-wood. Poplar, maple, and alder are also all exotic hardwoods and are sometimes made into guitars the same way.
Agathis is in the pine familly and commonly named, kauri pine. It grows in newzealand and the philipines so it's readily available to the guitar making industry.
As far as wood quality goes, it can handle more dry and more moist extreems better than mahogany (wich is a very soft, very pourous wood) and is comparably as hard as maple, wich means it's hard and a bitch to sand. It's rots at about half the rate of mahogany and is less toxic. I personally prefer maple necks with maple or koa wings with figure maple on top, i think it gives great solid, high end response.
alot of people like mahogany wings for added warmth but I don't like matching it to other wood, because since it expands and contrasts at a different rate, theres a good chance the glue line will start to swell and it just looks horrable.
When I laminate mahogany, theres a horrable process of sanding, filling, sanding, filling, ect while wearing a mask because it's highly toxic.
I would take agathis over mahogany any day.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Dec 7,2004 6:59pm
particle wood=plywood.
Im sure mahog sucks to work with, but I prefer mahog or alder over agathis tone.
agathis sound dry to me, and dont sustain as much.
also, as long as both woods you are 'matching' to each other are pourous or non pourous, they will usually work together.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Dec 7,2004 6:59pm
I mean, theres a reason agathis guitars are cheaper than mahog or alder, or even poplar.

toggletoggle post by Blue  at Dec 7,2004 7:07pm
agathis is the cheapo production guitar wood. all cheapo esp ltds are made with this wood. nothing special to me, ill take alder instead.

toggletoggle post by Niccolai   at Dec 7,2004 7:10pm
People shouldn't mistake budget agathis made in sheets out of it's sawdust and resin; It's not uncommon for a professional to order a $2000+ guitar out of agathis.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Dec 7,2004 7:12pm
dood...dont you think that that is what everybody is thinking of when they hear agathis?
not the 2000 dollar agathis filet mignon.

Thats what i was looking at, a Ltd MH-400(agathis body, set neck, emg -81's, q. maple top, $629). I have a older mh series (mh-301) ltd, but mine is made of mohogany and is neck thru. these newer mh ltd's are all agathis , with a set neck. Im gonna have to look for and older one.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Dec 7,2004 11:40pm

Yes, my bad, i got all them consused. The Mh-400 and mh-400nt are mohog w/ set neck. the mh-250 / 250nt / m-200 fm are neck thru w/agathis body.

toggletoggle post by litacore   at Dec 8,2004 9:37am
any which way, the Ents would not approve

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Dec 8,2004 10:54am
I wish they nade the 400 with a green or red top. I would buy one fast, but for now, I will keep watching ebay in hopes for a green mh 300 or 301...DAMMIT.

careful there, no 200 series esp/ltd is neck through.

for the most part:
50/100 series: bolt on
200 series: bolt on/set neck
300 series: set neck/neck through

ESP also has what they like to call 'set through' wich has absolutely no tonal difference or added perks than a set neck. It's as much a scam as thier earvanna compensation nut.

toggletoggle post by danzo at Mar 31,2011 12:54pm
no agathis is not plywood it is a solid wood more availible and can be just as good as top brand makes
