Band members claim police brutality

LEOMINSTERâ A fight broke out in a mosh pit Saturday during a punk concert in a church and spilled into the parking lot, and one of the three people who were arrested tried to flee the police station while he was handcuffed, according to District Court records.

A band called Cut Throat was playing in the hall at First Church Unitarian Universalist, Leominster, at the time of the fight, according to records.

While police described a melee with people swearing at officers, resisting arrest and striking officers, a Web site on MySpace for the band is claiming police brutality.


One person posting on the Web site for Cut Throat said the band was peacefully preparing to leave after the concert had been broken up, and was loading its equipment when police harassed and provoked one of the band members and âmaced and beat up other members of the band.â

A patch for the Leominster Police Department is the icon on the Web site for a song called âReleaseâ by the band. The lyrics begin, âBlame it on the bands. Itâs convenient for you to spread your lies â¦â

The Rev. Susan Suchocki Brown of the Unitarian church, which is on West Street, disputed the police brutality claims.

Adults who were supervising the concert told the pastor that âthese kids were totally out of control,â she said.

âI just feel terribly sad about it,â she said. She said she is embarrassed that police had to get involved.

Youths have rented out the church, which is closed during the summer, for three or four other concerts. Those events have gone well, with respectful, polite youngsters, she said. Youths who are not old enough to drink alcohol come, and there have been Christian bands, she said.

âThen this one just went wicked bad,â Rev. Suchocki Brown said about the Saturday concert.

Band member Scott J. Rea, 21, of 4 Linden St. in Rockland, was charged with assault and battery on a police officer; trespassing; resisting arrest; and disorderly conduct, court records said. Cash bail was set at $500 and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 18.

Band member Andrew W. Bezanson, 23, of 286 Pine St. in East Bridgewater, was charged with trespassing; resisting arrest; and assault and battery on a police officer, records said. Cash bail was set at $500 and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 18.

Joseph R. Barrett, 22, of 183 Temple St. in Whitman, was charged with trespassing; disorderly conduct; and resisting arrest, court records said. Cash bail was set at $500 with a pretrial hearing scheduled for Sept. 18.

Timothy W. Murphy, a Leominster lawyer representing Mr. Barrett, said his client suffered a cut on his head that he says was from a police baton.

Narratives by police in court records described the following events that led to the arrests.

The Leominster Fire Department reported a fight in a parking lot behind the fire station.

Police found about 50 to 60 people in the parking lot, with about 10 to 15 people fighting.

Officers tried to control the crowd, but couldnât, and asked for help from other cities and state police.

When police went into the church they were met with âverbal insults and threats.â

Ashley Antonucci, who was teary-eyed, told police she had hired Cut Throat and now nobody would leave and things were getting out of control. She said a fight in the mosh pit had spilled outside, and asked police to tell everyone to leave.

Police tried to break up the concert, and part of the crowd complied and began leaving. Stragglers and others stayed behind, however, including Mr. Bezanson.

Mr. Bezanson was told many times to leave but âhe explicitly stated his lack of respect for the policeâ and resisted leaving.

Mr. Bezanson returned to the church, then emerged a short while later and ran into a police sergeant. It took several officers to restrain Mr. Bezanson, and several people began protesting the arrest.

After warnings, police used pepper spray on Mr. Bezanson and he was put in handcuffs.

Mr. Barrett resisted officersâ efforts to get the people protesting the arrest to leave, and was arrested. Once Mr. Barrett was put in custody and handcuffed, he ran off, but police caught him.

Mr. Barrett kicked and punched wildly and refused to comply with police, and hit an officer in the chest. Officers âused the force necessary to place Mr. Barrett into custody.â

Mr. Rea resisted efforts to get everyone out of the area and was arrested, court police said. Pepper spray was used to subdue Mr. Rea as well.

When Mr. Bezanson was taken into the police station garage to have water applied to his face to wash off the pepper spray, he knelt on the floor and appeared to be in a trance-like state but told an officer he was OK.

During this time, Mr. Barrett, who was also in the garage being decontaminated for pepper spray and was handcuffed, bolted from the police station and was apprehended again. Police believe he fled because he is the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant.

When an officer caught up to him, Mr. Barrett kicked the officer in the stomach and legs.

Mr. Barrett complained of having a broken right arm, but a doctor at UMass Memorial â HealthAlliance Leominster Campus said the injury was a previous break that already had healed. The doctor said the eveningâs events could have stressed the injury, but the arm was not broken.

but the real mess started AFTER the fight had been broken up and AFTER the show had been shut down. The guys from Cut Throat needed to get their gear out of the hall so they could LEAVE. The cops wouldn't listen and told them to leave. Andy (the singer) was coming out of the hall with a guitar head in his hands when he was tackled, maced, and beaten by several police offers. That's when the mess started.

this is a sad story to hear. it sounds like the media and the police departement are systematically working to profile and expliot power.
in essence, this is not about hardcore music, and hardcore kids being punks. this is about the abuse of power. lets look at this in retrospect. no, lets look at this in the aspect of being human. this event transcends musical boundries. what happened here is wrong. it doesnt matter what scene you come from. no one should be brutalized by police, and then have the small time media justify the corrupt actions. i hope that this reaches you well.my regards to the wounded...xjosephx

I rarely post anything serious, but this situation bothers me a whole hell of a lot. Everyone can make their cute comments because this is a "hardcore" band, but whichever way you want to spin it, police brutality cannot be tolerated. We don't live in a police state where the officer is the law.
Even if they had been mouthy or even resisted in the least, the amount of force used was clearly unnecessary, especially if you have ever seen these guys.
My point is, this could be you someday, and you'd probably hope for people to stand up for you. So sign the petition and make sure that an investigation is started and it's made clear that police brutality is not something that will go unnoticed.

sorry...i didnt even read the whole message or what you guys had to say about what happened. thats some serious shit. you hear of a lot of shows getting broken up because of fights. but if cops started beating up kids just because they were talking back thats not right at all. i totally agree. cops suck, they probably got scared by the "crowd" and overreacted. hopefully they will see some type of consequences for their actions.

anyone remember the Anal Cunt/As the Sun Sets show on Halloween like 6 years ago at the Met? A bunch of fights broke out during AC and the show got shutdown. The cops were waiting outside to make everyone leave. Everyone was leaving, no one was talking back to the cops, no one was fighting. I look to the other side of the street and see this little dude, scrawny looking kid, no older than 17, he's standing there looking like he's waiting on a friend of his to come out, not saying a word, standing perfectly still. A cop walks by and maces the kid. No reason for it whatsoever. The cop never arrested him, or even gave him an indication as to why he did it. The cop walked away and the kid was still standing there holding his face.

It's easy to blame the cops, yeah. But I'm sure just about anyone on this board can think of a time a cop did something stupid for no reason at a show.

This whole situation is messed up. You have the cops saying one thing, and the band/fans saying another. The stories on both sides don't even match up that well. There are a few things I do know...

-One of the members of CT had an outstanding warrent (DUI or something like that).
-The guys in CT got messed up (and it is a shame it happened).
-I have never had a problem with a cop that I did not start because I was doing something wrong.
-Cops sometimes (for whatever reason) do beat up people when they are not at fault. It doesn't happen when you have 3 diffrent groups of cops at once (Staties, Lunenburg, and Leominster).
-There was a good-sized crowd. In that situation, if you are not doing exactly as you are told, you are bound to get in trouble.
-I have met many people that say they did nothing wrong when the cops did something to them. Some were right (but to the cops it didn't look that way) and some were flat-out lying.

I don't know what happened, I wasn't there. I, however, will bet that the police are not at total fault here. Thats not to say they didn't over-react, but I'm sure that CT was not as innocent as they say.

hey, this is mike from POR. i have been skeptical of some police brutality stories in the past, but i was there that night and saw everything (that's my white shoe in the blood pic). the police were totally out of line. also, none of the kids involved in the fight, which was the cops showed in the first place, got arrested. i'm ready to testify

For visual reference check the photos of any of the hundreds of shows that have been photographed for THIS website. I'm not saying that every punk-rocker is an angel, and every cop is an asshole. I don't doubt there were kids running their mouths there. I don't doubt there were cops who just wanted everyone to leave and clear the area. However, I know the kids that got beat by these cops and I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to believe it took 4+ cops and weapons to restrain either of them. I am fairly confident that if you hand me a baton i alone could take either of them. Never mind throw in 3 of my friends, a can of mace, self-defense training and years of pent-up jock rage.

Shows happen every week without incident. This has been the first fight at a show in quite some time. You'd know that if you had a clue what you were talking about.



Again, that's not the issue at all. There was a disturbance and it needed to be dealt with. There's a professional way to do it, and there's a ridiculous way to do it that involves macing, beating, and arresting people that weren't even involved in the fight, and had a rational fair reason to be there. It's totally unprofessional, and unbecoming of an officer.

I almost got arrested 2 weeks ago because I was protecting 2 18 year old girls from 4 very drunk people and the bar behind them. I had to sweet talk my way out of it. Before that I almost get arrested because I walked across a pit, get hit by an officer, I elbow him because I don't know who it is, but I just nudged him to get away. He drops me to the ground, and then carrys me out of the show. I got off because my 11 year old sister was in the building. That's cool. Arrest 16 year olds because you hit them.



I'm all for the protest. If some one drives me I will support.

My town? I don't live in Leominster. Neither do any of the kids involved. In fact, I don't even live in A "town". I live in a city and pretend it's 2006 where police power abuse is a serious issue (i.e. not something to be dismissed on the word of some cop's boyfriend). This is the first hardcore show I've heard of in Leominster since I was 18 probably. We have plenty of legitimate venues to book at that police don't use for mace target practice. As I've stated before, which you're welcome to go back and read, a handfull of the kids that took a beating were good friends of mine. A number of the individuals who witnessed these acts are good friends of mine who I consider to be level-headed people, and whose opinions I regard highly. I can obviously see how someone on the outside might be quick to take the word of the police, however in this situation I feel it neccessary to take the word of my friends. the cop's had no clue, showed up cause something was going on. kids gave them attitude. the cops got scared and "over-reacted" and grabbed some people that shouldn't have been grabbed and miscommunicated with each other (the yelling at people to leave, but not letting them and then macing them especially sice this is leominster and the most the cops do is pull over black people and make them turn around at the city limits). these people got scared and "over-reacted".

in the end, the venue will probably be shutdown or put out of the price-range of average people. CT will be very very thankful for the support of everyone, but nothing will really get changed by the protest. the Police will have some info/learning/healing sessions that the public will be invited to.
as for the people arrested? most things will be plead/barganed/dropped and there will probably just be some light fines/probation.

LOL.... first, they dont carry machine guns. they carry 9mm or .357 semi automatic pistols. however, some officers carry M16-A2 service weapons (rifle) in their cruisers but they could lose their jobs if they bring those into a room full of "completely innocent, friendly, cooperative teenagers" listening to music... so already your exagerating.... next, there is ONE officer to a car!! they have asked to put 2 officers in a car but that will cost us (the taxpayers) more money so that was shut down.. the Police go by a set of rules... they cant just do whatever they want.. unfortunatly, your not the first to question the PD's handling of certain situations.. but, THATS THEIR JOB AND THATS WHAT WE (taxpayers) PAY THEM TO DO... you need to understand that everyone that gets in trouble with the law always calls out the PD for something.. whether its "going beyond the law" or "mis-handling suspects" people often forget that YOUR THE REASON THEY ARE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!! if you were really cooperative and respectful they wouldnt be there in the first place!!!!!! dont tell me that all those kids were friendly law-abiding citizens.... i WAS one of them and i know how teens are!!!!!

Last week police shut down a show in Leominster. In doing so police arrested, maced, and injured members of the band Cut Throat, and Everything To Fear, along with other people not involved in any fight. The police's tactics were called into question. Cut Throat, a number of witnesses, and concerned friends have expressed that they feel an injustice has been committed, and feel the need to take action.

Somehow, some way, this offends the hell out of a bunch of meatheads that nobody knows. People who don't usually post here, and really have nothing to do with anything have taken it upon themselves to defend the actions of the police. This defense seems to include name calling, the opinion that people who listen to different music deserve to be beaten, bafflingly poor grammar, and threats.

And I'm pretty sure Vinny is hitting on Spalding.

Furthermore, I'd just like to reitterate that I have all the respect in the world for police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, and of course the armed forces of the United States. I throw my full support behind my friends, and family that occupy these positions, risk their lives, and carry their jobs with the dignity that they deserve.

However, I have never, nor will I ever give an ounce of respect to bullies in any form, or any one who chooses to disgrace these proud occupations by abusing their power. My stance is simple... It is my personal belief SHOULD someone commit such an abuse of power they should be removed from duty.

My brother is in law enforcement, along with at least half a dozen friends I can think of off the top of my head. One of my good friends is both a paramedic, and fire fighter, his father being the fire chief in his town.
