Isis: I really enjoyed these guys, and this is a huge tour for them, I wouldn't be surprised to see them jump up in popularity by the end of this tour. They were a mix of old Godflesh and current Jesu, which is awesome.

Tool: Fucking amazing. Huge screens playing awesome visuals and the music was spot on. Definitely one of the top 3 live bands I've ever seen.

they were lame when I saw them.

toggletoggle post by Sinislazy at Sep 30,2006 12:31pm
Music, yes, awesome. I have to disagree on the visuals. There was too much repetition for my tastes.

isis is opening for Tool? Holy shit

toggletoggle post by BobNOMAAMRooney nli at Sep 30,2006 3:04pm
The only problem with Isis opening for Tool is that they might attract the fanbase that Tool has.

Not all Tool fans are like this but you know the type, people who blindly follow everything the band does and act as if liking Tool makes them some sort of mental giant. Same thing with douchebags who like the Mars Volta.

Like people who listened to Radio Head a few years ago. They thought they were so deep. Tool is really good but the Mars Volta is gay.

I thought the visuals were pretty amazing myself, considering all the time it took to set that shit up and all I'm glad they came out as well as they did. There were mirrors in the lighting truss to deflect the lasers.

toggletoggle post by Kevord  at Sep 30,2006 4:08pm edited Sep 30,2006 4:08pm
Were there sharks with lazer beams attached to there foreheads? Or a lifesize replica of stonehendge?

Like three of my buddies blew off my band last night to go see tool.

What a bunch of tools.

The difference being that The Mars Volta is actually good.

Talented, not good.

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with liking The Mars Volta.

I don't have a problem with people listening to what they want to but I've found that the majority of Tool and Mars Volta fans are massive queers when it comes to taking criticism about those bands. And one of their first defenses is to question the intelligence of the critic, as if listening to mainstream rock music is on the same level as holding a doctorate.

that's fair. I hate when people defend what they like by saying, "well, then you just don't get it." Being pretentious is shitty.

don't bring this down with the mention of the mars volta...this show was amazing

with the exception of the very few (who i dont get), tool is just pseudo intellectual music for pseudo intellectuals.

haha, that about sums it up, except the part where you said that the mars volta is better than tool, since you implied that the mars volta is good in some way. but yeah, tool is for idiots who think they're geniuses.

i enjoy Tool's music. its good and relaxing and at times really amazing. Mars Volta is trendy to like and i cant get into them no matter what. i dont think they are a good band. it sucks when talented guys get together and create a suck factory like MV. it's not that i dont "get" the music, because I listen to shit like Yes, Eloy, Anathema, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Camel, Asia, IQ, Marillion, Glass Hammer, Transatlantic, so on and so forth and other "artsy" bands that dont make sense to people that casually listen to music, its just that their music isnt any good. it doesnt evoke feelings of enjoyment. its like its a chore to listen to them. some cool parts at times, but thats about it really. Porcupine Tree rapes Mars Volta. and people are in this thread are right: Mars Volta worshippers are pretentious douche bags that think they have transcended mankind because they bought "De-loused...". WHOOPEE-DAMN-DOO! *twirls finger around*

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Oct 1,2006 9:30am edited Oct 1,2006 9:37am
Well, not to be inflammatory, but I do not feel Mars Volta is trendy. Their music is phenomenal not to mention crazy, they definitely invoke feelings of enjoyment for me, and I do not feel they are a chore to listen to. Conceptually they are also amazing, and they have great lyrics.

I do not feel I have transcended mankind, I just really like their music. It's innovative and different, and fun. I guess I haven't run into their 'queer' fanbase that was mentioned.

But I have run into Tool's.

I enjoyed Porcupine Tree when they did their more experimental records and their earlier, goth/pop sounding material, lately they've been a little too VH1/Audioslave/radio rock. Still, an awesome band, but they sound nothing like Mars Volta though and couldn't play their music if they tried.

toggletoggle post by HailTheLeaf  at Oct 1,2006 10:32am edited Oct 1,2006 10:35am
I have no idea who the Mars Volta are...never heard 'um.

toggletoggle post by sacreligion at Oct 1,2006 10:39am
hlf of em used to be "at the drive-in"

i read an interview where the guitarist said something to the effect of "i hate playing guitar, i just do it cause it's the only thing close enough to how i want to express myself"

it's attitudes like that that are going to make your fan base a bunch of pretentious douchebags

toggletoggle post by HailTheLeaf  at Oct 1,2006 10:40am edited Oct 1,2006 10:42am
That doesn't help much...never heard of "at the drive in" either...sounds like a gay band though...one of those bands that has half of a sentence that goes nowhere as their band name. I'm guessing they have women's haircuts and might wear makeup.

toggletoggle post by sacreligion at Oct 1,2006 10:42am
emo-y prog-rock, essentially

toggletoggle post by Kevord  at Oct 1,2006 11:34am edited Oct 1,2006 12:25pm
Trust me Scott The Mars Volta is the trendy band to listen to. Like I said earlier they're the new Radio Head.

toggletoggle post by MR. sphincter at Oct 1,2006 12:24pm

ATDI was a great band, and so is MV.

tool is for nu metal douches. there. i said it.

tool isn't even nu-metal though...they're completely separate from pretty much everything

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Oct 1,2006 4:21pm
ok so I'm all set to shoot the Red Hot Chili Peppers tomorrow and just got an email from the Mars Volta people who saw that I was shooting...anyhow, she went on to tell me that if i want to shoot the mars volta that i need to sign a release (RHCP didn't ask me to sign squat) haha
oh well..just funny...and also i guess they (TMV) won't have a barricade ...they have a "no barricade photo policy" so i need to bring a long lens

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Oct 2,2006 10:45am
everything is better than gay ass Mars Volta. as for this show, this was a Tool fans dream. it was beyond anything i had expected, it was basically sensory overload. i fucking love Tool, and for it being the first time i saw them, i was more than impressed. yes yes i know you hate them and they are this and that and blah blah blah, but i dont care. they are amazing.

tool was not good. i've seen them like 5 or 6 times and this was the worst time by far. the "visuals" were just videos that consisted of shit from the music videos and stuff from previous tours. Wow, they had lasers, so does Blue Oyster Cult. They were not tight. They barely moved. They only played 5 older songs in 2 hours. They played schism so slow I thought it would never end. Adam Jones fucked up several times. I like tool but their new album is just shit. Rehashing old ideas with some lame numetal riffs. Hey look everybody I can play a different rhythm in drop d. Oh but they did have $70 sweatshirts and $60 long sleeve shirts!

toggletoggle post by Beaver McD at Oct 2,2006 2:16pm
I really enjoyed this show, it was definitely up there for one of the best times I've ever had at a concert. I had never seen Tool before and I had a blast while I was there. Regardless if they didn't hold up to everyone elses standards I still had an amazing time and I don't care what anyone else thinks. They played pretty much everything I wanted to hear, granted they didn't play anything off of Undertow which I would have liked to have seen but no big deal, they are on tour with a new album, so I didn't expect them to play that much older stuff. I don't buy merchandise so the prices on that stuff didn't upset me. Overall it was a really good time.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Oct 2,2006 2:45pm
ok it was a good show i got to go for free (acculy i got paid to be there) and i ended up in the 3rd row! on a down side i lost my wallet anyone find a black wallet w/ red flames anywere in the place please email me xskippeyx@hotmail.com i dont care about the money (wasent much anyway) i just want my lisence and shit back.
thanks JVV

I used to be a huge Tool fan but this new album is just shit. Aenima was amazing and groundbreaking as well as their other 3 but this new album is just for payday. Its easy to put up with Maynard being such a dick when they're putting out great music but now he's just a pompous ass.

By the way, Isis is sick! Really original and atmospheric.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Oct 2,2006 3:25pm
anyone in this board who says tool was not good is a fucking idiot.. plain and simple... that show was without a doubt the best show i have ever seen.. anyone who was not a big enough fan to apreciate it should not have bothered going

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Oct 3,2006 12:15am
bullshit, anyone who blindly loves a band no matter what they do is a fucking idiot plain and simple. they were not tight, they fucked up several times, they played shit slow, they pretty much only played shit off their new less than stellar album, they didn't have nearly as cool a visual show as they did on the Lateralus tour. Like I said I've seen Tool 5 or 6 times going back to Ozzfest 98. I know a good Tool show and this WAS NOT one of them.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Oct 3,2006 3:32pm
well seeing as this was the first one i've been too. i have no basis for comparison. but i was still blown away. and i heard no fuckups.. As for the music.. which album they played and which are your favorites is completely up to you. as everyone is entitled to their own opinon, but let me ask you this.. if you didn't like the album why'd you even go to the show?

toggletoggle post by SacreligionNLI at Oct 3,2006 4:30pm
stop talking to yourself

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Oct 3,2006 5:08pm
seriously... their new album is GOOD. lateralus is their worst.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Oct 3,2006 7:20pm
tool just get more and more amazing with each new cd and every show. just because they have progressed fromt he 5 riff tunes doesn't mean they suck. they're no longer a simple band. they're fucking great in every aspect of the word. seriously give it another listen. amazing stuff.

toggletoggle post by Anti-Racism  at Oct 3,2006 7:21pm

Tool spelled forward is Tool.

It's still my belief that they named themselves that just to get people to wear shirts proclaiming themselves as tools.
