Newport man rescued from Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - A tourist clung to a well-placed rock in the middle of pounding rapids near the brink of Niagara Falls as rescuers teetered across a fallen tree to reach him, parks police said Friday.

John Dwyer, 30, of Newport, R.I., would have been swept over the Falls in less than a minute had he lost his grip, New York State Park Police said a day after the rescue.
"He was hanging on. I don't know how long he was there," Chief Vincent Iacovitti said. "He indicated to the officers he was there a long time."
Dwyer was treated for shock and exposure at Niagara Falls Medical Center and later charged with reckless endangerment for risking the lives of the officers who rescued him, as well as disorderly conduct and obstructing governmental administration, police said. He was arraigned Friday in Niagara City Court and was being held on $1,000 bail. He was unavailable for comment at the city jail.
About 3 p.m. Thursday, Dwyer and his friend, David Boccuzzi of Providence, R.I., decided to wade into the river off the northwest shore of a grouping of islands that attracts thousands of tourists daily.
"You can really get a perspective on the power of the rapids there," Iacovitti said.
Dwyer apparently lost his footing and was swept through a small, swift channel between two islands and shot out into the rapids, where he found a rock below the surface of the water and held on. Niagara Falls is made up of three, separate falls: the Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Dwyer was in the water above the Horseshoe Falls. Boccuzzi was able to get out of the water on his own.
With a growing audience of tourists, a three-man rescue team made its way across a tree that had fallen from Three Sisters Island onto Little Brother Island to get close enough to throw a line to Dwyer.
"Our officers had to go into the water to get closer. They tied themselves on to do that," the chief said. "If he would have broken loose from that location there wouldn't have been a whole heck of a lot we would have been able to do," he added.
Once rescuers had Dwyer secured in a basket, "the trick was to get him back over to Three Sister Island across the fallen tree trunks," Iacovitti said. Rescuers accomplished that by sliding the basket along the tree, which was about a foot in diameter.
There are no fences keeping tourists from the water, but the obvious power of the rapids is enough to keep most from venturing in.
Even so, said Iacovitti, "there's always individuals out there who like to experiment and explore."

I think you all must realize that Dwyer put out the Dehumanized CD. He could have been flying one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center and he'd still be considered an American hero.

yea rev put us in for that!!! More than happy to pass them out!

toggletoggle post by pam   at Jan 8,2007 1:28pm
I can hand em out and put them in 'zine mail with the 90,000 other fliers I throw in.

toggletoggle post by ShItBaG at Jan 8,2007 1:34pm
i want 1 for my guitarhero guitar

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Jan 8,2007 1:55pm
I'm sure most of them would go wasted, especially if you throw them in with 90,000 other flyers. Rev, are you getting these stickers for free or ya got money to burn????

toggletoggle post by pam   at Jan 8,2007 1:55pm
You obviously don't know the zine mailing world than.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Jan 8,2007 1:57pm
I would put a RttP sticker on my guitar, where it would be seen by nobody. :(

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Jan 8,2007 3:14pm
I know enough that it would all end up in the trash. Don't you go to shows? Whenever that shit gets handed out all you see is paper and stickers on the floor.

toggletoggle post by pam   at Jan 8,2007 4:12pm
Uh...yeah I go to shows. And you don't know the zine trade people, I have fliers signed by 20+ people from all over the world. I wouldn't send the rev's stickers to be tossed on the ground. So no, you don't know.

toggletoggle post by Dwellingsickness at Jan 8,2007 6:02pm
I have a ton of friends....Most of them are imaginary though
