there is nothing wrong with triggers. seriuosly, there is a certain bass drum speed that if your going that fast you just CANNOT be heard clearly, it blends together, even if your technique is perfect. And if you make a mistake with triggers, everybody hears it. really really well. Yes, you dont have to hit the drum quite as hard, but you have to have perfect timing...... and yes i recently got a trigger for my bass drum.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Feb 8,2008 3:30pm
i think triggers are just fine for sound clarity, but not for enhancing speed.

nuttin wrong wit triggers. imagine Morbid Angel live without them....

I am not sure what triggers your talking about, but my triggers dont even have an option for enhancing speed. I think what your talking about is sorta a myth, i mean some triggers MIGHT make two sounds for every one hit, or something like that, but no triggers i have ever seen/used do that.

The triggers argument does not have to come into play here, mainly because...

THE FUCKING ROBOT IS PLAYING DRUMS WITH 4 ARMS!

i always thought that "myth" refered to studio use. it's MUCH easier to edit triggered sounds than real drums.
For Gillis's drum sound on the unreleased Kevorkian's Angels album we used the real bass drum and a triggered track. the trigger fired a sample of his kick drum...it sounds devastating

by edit i mean move into metronome timing instead of human timing, we kept the timing how he played it, but the range of sounds and shit you can do with computer based recording is fucking unreal.

I just started using triggers. They have their ups and downs. As long as you still focus on becoming consistent, it will only make you a better player I think. Triggers have forced me to become louder with some of the faster stuff I do, so that the trigger can pick it up. (I could jack up the sensitivity, but then I'd get misfires from speaker cabs vibrating the head, so I don't).

Triggers also force me to be more careful about what I do with the beaters in between hits. I really should just NOT bury the beaters when I'm not playing, but I never got into that habit, so I'm just more careful now.

Lastly, I don't hit the pedals with excessive power anymore for some of the slower stuff to get the sound I want. You don't really need to with triggers, and you don't really need to if you're in a mic'd studio/live environment anyway. (and if you have the right head). I made a conscious effort to not do this anymore even before I got triggers.

Let's face it, untriggered or un-mic'd kickdrums aren't loud enough and sound like shit in death metal anyway. Triggers are only forcing me to become more consistent with my doublebass playing. DM doesn't need a whole lot of dynamics for drums usually anyway.

And I know DestroyYouAlot's original post was a joke, but I'm just throwing my 2 cents in to the inevitable trigger controversy.

Also... I tried practicing with the triggers on for NooseBomb. I don't think I like it. I think that style needs a little bit of dynamics. TYAG/Composted/BoE/ETF is another story though.

thank you mike. triggers only work for DM, ill take acoustic any other day.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Feb 8,2008 5:50pm
You can avoid triggers by velcro'ing a stainless steel kickpad to your bass drum, but that would just sound fucking stupid.

Scott Lee: "What do you have on your bass drum?"
Me: "Oh, it's a piece of stainless steel"
(long pause)
Scott Lee: "That's fucking retarded."

I think the biggest death metal drumming debate now lies with the one handed roll. I've never seen anybody ever do one (outside a triggered or studio setting) that was loud enough to be heard over the rest of the drums and instruments. And that's even counting the quieter players I've seen who I still consider to be very good & consistent drummers.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Feb 8,2008 5:57pm
agreed^ i can play one and it sound plenty loud until everyone else kicks in...

toggletoggle post by Blue  at Feb 8,2008 6:48pm
thats why you have to trigger the triggers, to get that really tight sound.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Feb 8,2008 7:58pm
hahaha

they should make it so the sample for the bass drum trigger is a ride ping.

thats what the real mamma slammaz do

if you don't like bass drops

yo ain't no friend of mine

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Feb 8,2008 9:25pm
I've done both of these. I'm sure everyone with triggers has. It's funny for about a half a second. Then not so much. haha

Thats where I have a slight problem.

Yeah, overall since i've got triggers i just focus on my feet being 100% accurate. It really has been great for my playing. Altough i have the DM5 and i feel like i should've spent the extra couple hundo on a better one, its alright but i want to have more options.
