OK, you finally got me - I'm gonna check out some Pink Floyd. My dad was into them, so I automatically disdained all things Floyd as a kid (rebellious punk that I was), and nothing I've heard from them on the radio has turned my ears on. But, a) I've heard a few snippets from them that make me think there's something there to check out, and b) 10 million Elvis fans can't be wrong.

So where do I start?

toggletoggle post by xanonymousx at Feb 29,2008 12:11pm
Animals is pretty good.
Wish you Were Here is also a good one too.
others will have different opinions.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Feb 29,2008 12:11pm
my favorite is Animals

toggletoggle post by W3 nli at Feb 29,2008 12:15pm
ummagumma
darkside of the moon
animals
meddle
live at pompeii

id go with those to start

toggletoggle post by Karma-Enema at Feb 29,2008 12:17pm
the wall and dark side of the moon are just classic.
atom heart mother is older but good too.

plus works , momentary lapse of reason , the final cut.

start by dropping acid and watching the wall

THE WALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It might be best to start with the classics...on second thought...while Animals is my favorite, I did start with The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon...I think that may have to be the rite of passage

toggletoggle post by Pires at Feb 29,2008 12:40pm
animals is a must. the wall is good but just skip over the radio songs. wish you were is another great album too. stay away from dark side. you've heard it all on the radio cause thats all they play.

As far as radio goes, most Floyd is pretty uninteresting out of context. Songs like have a cigar, dirty woman, another brick in the wall II, etc... are annoying every time I hear them on the radio, but at the same time I love listening to those albums, even those particular songs. It's all about the context. Floyd made albums, not singles.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Feb 29,2008 1:01pm
And who are you calling hippies? What are you, the drummer of that horrible band move the rabbit?

sorry, I couldn't resist. I was missing all the recent drama threads.

toggletoggle post by niflheim at Feb 29,2008 1:04pm
Everything before "The Wall" is quality. Live In Pompeii is worth the price just for "Echoes" and "Us and Them" alone.

toggletoggle post by aril at Feb 29,2008 1:20pm
Honestly, I think older Pink Floyd is better.
But Steve, have you heard Amon Duul II?

toggletoggle post by cav nli at Feb 29,2008 1:21pm
animals is zeee best!

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 29,2008 1:21pm edited Feb 29,2008 1:23pm
See, I should probably mention that I've seen The Wall 45 thousand times, but at a relatively young age (sophomore in high school), and most of the significance completely escaped me at the time. (My then-foster brother watched it four times a day, every day, on large amounts of acid, for about a month straight. So I'd come home from school and he'd be sort of sitting there staring at the TV, unreachable. For me it was just a blur of hammers and shaved eyebrows, but I'm imagining it'd be easier to get into now.)

Ha - So after making a big show of asking, I went ahead and DLed "Piper at the Gates of Dawn," ignoring all the advice I was given. Which is typical of me. We'll see where I go next.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Feb 29,2008 1:52pm
unlike anything they've done since that...definitely an interesting album

like the beatles, pink floyd varies a lot over its career. The most popular were Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. Both of those are good times all the way through.

Wish You Were Here is also good, as is Animals.

toggletoggle post by aril at Feb 29,2008 2:46pm
anyone else ever prefer moody blues or king crimson to floyd?

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 29,2008 2:54pm

The Wall is my favorite...and watch the movie now-it's way better when you get it. Wish You Were Here, Dark Side and Animals are all good shit.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 29,2008 4:41pm
Piper was OK. Definitely different, and it must've been pretty jarring for its time. Ummagumma, I liked a lot. (More the studio disc than the live one, but both were good.) I'll probably do Dark Side, next - believe it or not, I've never actually listened to that record.

toggletoggle post by kadooganomics 101 at Feb 29,2008 5:06pm
I prefer the stuff with Syd. Less stuffy. Do it.

Live in Pompeii.

Re-actor
Meddle
Dark side Of The moon. (played to death by classic rock stations, but who cares.)
Saucerful Of secrets
More Soundtrack
ummagumma - The live tracks are amazing. The rest is like a bad acid trip. (You might enjoy it.)

Oh, and The Wall.

as far as i'mconcerned you can't go wrong with anything , i even like "the final cut". i don't own anything without Roger Waters
