the movie SLC Punk shows the proper way to interview for a job

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Aug 12,2008 1:02pm
The only way to get better at interviews is to go on a ton of them, and fail at most of them. Don't plan out a whole bunch of shit to say. Memorize a few bulletpoints of points you want to make, and a couple good one liners.

A big part of why they're so hard is that most interviewERs suck. They're boring, they ask really poor questions, and they act like they don't want to be there.

Shitty job interview questions to which their is no good answer:
- What's your biggest fault?
- Where do you see yourself in _ years? (this is a trap if you're a recent college graduate or just accepting a close-to-entry-level position because odds are whatever you're doing you're only using this job as a stepping stone)

toggletoggle post by sever at Aug 12,2008 1:12pm
"tell me something about yourself that isnt on this application."

I uhh... umm... did a lot of landscaping at big places and stuff like that and other stuff and yeah and i uhh.. well um we did things as a team together with teamwork and stuff and I uh work well as a team

DO NOT fart during your interview. I did that once and it was horrible.

toggletoggle post by fleshfries at Aug 12,2008 1:20pm
Just say everything you think they'd want to hear...it won't matter once you get the job. Oh, and always look at them eye to eye when talking, it shows confidence.

A lot of interviewers are complete assholes and setup questions so that if you try to tell them exactly what you think they want to hear, you'll contradict something else they'll be asking later. Again, this is especially true if you're younger.

I are good at interviewings. The most important thing is to be confident, but not egotistical, and show your personality. The interview is more about your professionalism and personality more than your technical skills and qualifications.

Yup, the key is to be truthful, but think it through and anticipate what they want to hear for an answer. For the biggest fault/weakness question I always give them some sappy line like "I'm a perfectionist" (fuck it, it's a sappy question, right?). I then immediately explain how I don't let that quality hinder my productivity. I can still focus on the big picture and prioritize my work tasks all while remaining detail-oriented.

Also, I did hate that "where do you see yourself in x amount of years" question when I was entry level. It's like they're asking you to lie because there's no way in fuck you want to be entry level in 5 years. I overthink EVERYTHING always. Sometimes it gets me in trouble and sometimes it's good. With this situation it's usually good. I think 1 of 2 things is happening here:
1) The interviewer is just an idiot and read about this question in a magazine. If that's the case, give them your honest answer and if they don't like it and don't hire you, then you won't be working for a company that hires idiots. No big deal. 2) The interviewer KNOWS this is a tricky question and wants to see how you handle it. If you outright lie and say you're going to be there at that job, then that will show that you have no ambition and are a giant kissass with no personality professional attitute. It may also tell them that you are answering some of the questions untruthfully. They won't trust you. When I got this question I would always just tell them I want to learn as much as possible and do everything in my power to become better within my field. I hoped to move up the ladder and excel at each position. I would then drop hints about inquiring as to whether the position I was applying for had room for advancement. They want you to show ambition but at the same time don't want you to be careless and unprofessional enough to just fuck them over and leave them high and dry for another company/position.

haha I was just reminded of what ConquerTheBaphomet said to me Sunday after we were hanging out for a good portion of the day. "I expected you to be a lot more weird and perverted in person. You're pretty normal". I told him that the normal things are already being said on RttP. My contribution towards normalcy would be unneeded. However, nobody is posting dog rape photos or pedoscat, so I try to do my part in contributing towards an even more well-rounded RttP.

These are two awesome answers to crappy questions. EVERYBODY is going to say their biggest fault is perfectionism. If you don't then you're opening up a whole new can of worms. It's a load of shit, but it's better than admitting you take lunch breaks too long, or you never got around to learning how to use a fax machine. It's probably the only right answer, but only if you're specific, and believable about it.

I wish I had thought of the way you phrased your answer to the "where do you see yourself" question years ago when I was getting snagged in it like a fat guy a barbed wire field. TV and video is such an excruciatingly competitive field that the idea of anyone trying to advance themselves (i.e. not make $19,000 a year in a demeaning job forever) scares the shit out of everyone.

those are tough questions indeed. i specificially remember the dude asking me that and my answer was, "i have no faults" and "i see myself running this place in 5 years". it seemed to have worked.
