I am very pleasantly surprised, holy shit, never expected something like this to come out of these guys at this stage. Makes me think their is hope for the rest of the album

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Aug 26,2008 1:54am
The drums cut through too much in the mix and the guitars sound weak and thin. Otherwise, this wouldn't be that bad. It just sounds really dumb as is.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Aug 26,2008 2:04am edited Aug 26,2008 2:09am
This is the closest james has come to singing in the old style, that's a good thing. Now if they brought back a bit of the crunch...

edit: the stream from the official site sounds much better, I think the thinness is from the youtube encoding.

who cares? i don't get why people keep on trying to find reasons to like new metallica. yes this is better then stangerrr but it still isnt worth listening to.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Aug 26,2008 2:09am
I think you're holding on to the mentality that new Metallica WILL suck. Sure it's not amazing but saying it's not worth listening to is kind of harsh. For new age mainstream metal, it will probably expose all the newfags to something a bit different and a bit better. A lot of the Metallica haters should get off their high horses and appreciate what Metallica is doing even if the music isn't that good and they're all douchebags of the highest caliber.

toggletoggle post by ConquerTheBaphomet  at Aug 26,2008 2:15am
Wow, this actually doesn't suck that bad. A little forced but better than the previous song they released.

toggletoggle post by timma at Aug 26,2008 7:45am
Glad to see Lars toned down is trash can sounding snare. Not great, but definitely better than the other songs.

the reason being is because most of the people that do that (hold on and pray for more good metallica) grew up on metallica. Kill em all to and justice for all was what raised me, what taught me about riffage, it was definately the most influencial stuff (metal) while i was in grade school. Dont take this as an age insult, it just seems to me that people who were young during this time period think of metallica not just as a great metal band, but more what it MEANT to be metal back then. They really did define it, and i could see if you werent listening until "load" NEVER liking any of their material.

Anyways, i am just playing devils advocate. I am pretty damn sure metallica will NEVER do something i really like ever again. But i can totally understand why people try and try to like it.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Aug 26,2008 8:13am
no but really.... i just listened. Ya know what gets me the most? Its the fact that nothing they write has the EPIC feel it used to have. Now its just epic FAIL. haha, no but really it needs some heart, it sounds like they werent even trying when they wrote this stuff. I really they possess no more angst what-so-ever, and if thats the problem then oh well. But i think if they had some serious tragedys in their lives they might be able to jam again. You can't be TOO comfortable and still play jammin metal.

this is just so bad.

you know, when they wrote their best shit they were drinking and doing drugs and whatever.

they lived it, they didnt have to try and write a certain way. they just did.

now they are TRYING to play something and it sounds so void of legitimate feeling and purpose it's maddening. it's like your gay uncle who shows up to a cocktail party with a decent looking broad on his arm....it's just not all that believable..

just think some poor little fuck will have to cut his teeth on this as his or her 'gateway' into metal....glad i was born in 80.

True, but I do have to say it's the closest thing to the "old stuff" since I was in middle school (which was about 13 years ago). But you're right, the emotion they projected in the 1st 4 albums is completely gone. If it was there, this song would be very good.

toggletoggle post by tylor at Aug 26,2008 9:43am
it sounds like a group of 15 year olds who heard "master of puppets" for the first time and have been playing their instruments for a year and a half

on second thought, the first 25 seconds could easily be the background music for like a HYUNDAI LAST CHANCE EVENT sale

too little too late.

you can't fag it up for 4-5 albums than just come back and expect anyone to take it seriously.

there's so many better, heavier bands these days. metallica is obsolete.

Metallica in their current state is definitely obsolete thanks to their most recent 4 shit albums.

They need to hang it up.

toggletoggle post by aril at Aug 26,2008 12:46pm
let's put it this way:

this stuff is GOOD ENOUGH for their fanbase of people who have IQs less than 80 (which is now, sadly, most of their fan base.) People are going to fall in love with this crap.
As for the fans that are musicians themselves or at least know good music when they hear it, it'll be a dissapointment.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Aug 26,2008 12:52pm
i wonder what joe christianni thinks of this track.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Aug 26,2008 1:13pm
I saw him outside the South Shore Plaza playing it on an 80s boom box. I don't know how he got it on cassette tape.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Aug 26,2008 2:06pm
did he tell you his thoughts on the song or was he too busy blowing the walpole high football team?

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Aug 26,2008 2:18pm
Anybody else think this song sucks? Any group of 15 year old kids with combo amps and Master of Puppets on their iPods could have written a better song than this. In fact, a lot of this songs sounds more like 15 year olds ripping off Slayer as opposed to Metallica.

Seriously, this band has spent the last... what... 15 years shitting on their original fanbase? Give up.

My office mate is a metal head, ya know the kind who "cant understand all the yelling" and he likes stuff off of Load. He would like anything metallica put our as long as it wasnt ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. I played him this song this morning and he hated it.

The thing is that they play riffs that have- No key changes
No picking speed
& No Lead Lines (not solos!)
Riffs like metallica wrote were good because of the depth of them. Not only did they jam, but they had great lead lines that counterpointed the rhythms, and harmonized the riff itself. They were almost never just a couple power chords played mid tempo. Its bullshit, if you take all of the decent riffs off the new album (I am just speculating here, i have no idea if there are any, but lets pretend every song has one salvagable riff.) Oranize them in an interesting way , with interesting changes that put the riffs together in a flowing way; than have kirk hammett (or dave mustane if kirk cant cut it anymore) come in and write some fucking lead guitar over it; THEN add in some solos over the sections that dont have lyrics and you would have one good song that would sound like old Metallica.
I am serious. I think they could do it, but they just dont want to put that much time into writting music anymore, they make millions on shitty music that they can write easily probably about a song per practice or two. When you KNOW stuff from puppets took weeks to months each. Those riffs were so well thought out, those leads fit so well that if you werent a guitar player you really wouldnt notice them there, you would just notice how rocking and catchy and heavy it was.

It sucks, i try not to even talk about metallica these day because it bums me out, and now that i got talking, i am all pissed off. Those guys really suck. I never ever talk shit about bands, I really dont, i think "where do i get off" thinking like that, but yet i will say it again. These guys suck. The alienated all of there REAL fans, they've dissapointed us, and they've offended us. They need to go the fuck away.

i like the new shit when i hear it on the radio at work because its a decent song to listen to driving to the next task the park and rec department has for me and my crew.

when i listen to it in the context of metallica i like it less than st anger, and st anger sucked. at least on st anger they did something original (horrible, yes) and were trying new shit. this is just an obvious attempt to get back another demographic and go multi-platinum. why listen to master of puppets z-sides (b through y would be an insult to MOP) when i can just throw on the real thing? yeah my apocalypse is thrashy but it goes nowhere and the best part is the drums, which says A LOT

I find that hard to believe. Even if this were the new band "Rotisserie Abortion" that you'd never heard before, i think you would hate it. Even MORE than you do now. (If that's possible.)

i like it that's that. who cares, these guys are OLD so i give them something for the effort. i grew up on Kill 'em All back in 83 and if it weren't for these guys who knows man. but i stopped listening to them in 1991. i might just have to pick this one up after all these years...

One of my fondest metal memories was being perfectly stoned at And Justice For All tour in NH (manchester, I think) for For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Remember, back then, atom bombs going off with 30 minutes notice was on everyones mind.

Be that as it may, Metallica sold us out, and integrity, once lost, is damn near impossible to reobtain.

This track is certainly not enough.

It should have been Lars.

it has no heart and no anger.
but it is the closest to fast and heavy they have been in a looooooong time

let me throw this out there: When people post threads about the new "used to be good band" and say that it is good, or bad, or whatever; try not to pull "Why do you care" line. They don't. They are just voicing their opinions about what the thread is about. Right? or do you just want people with the same opinions as you to post? of course not, so let me pull this on you: "why do you care that i think it sucks?"
