I own MANY rifle but was recently thinking of purchasing an all around medium size game rifle.
I currently own a .280 TC Encore, a .50 TC Encore, a 7.62X39 Russian and a Benelli M1 Super 90 in 12G.
I am looking for a semi in .308 or 30-06, particularly the Remington Model 750. I need speed, as deer do run, accuracy, and lightweight mobility.
I'm afraid that the .308 is not enough for moose, but am also afraid that the 30-06 has much more bolt travel and recoil for adequate follow up shots. This can be a real dinger. The .308 and 30-06 also have very affordable round as they are common and everyone makes them.
My .280 is currently chewing up $30 per box of 20.
All rifle fire a standard 150 grain Nosler partition. All at 2700-3100 fps. The only difference is the muzzle energy vs. impact energy at 100yds. All are MOA.
so a .308 is not enough to stop a moose? 7.62 x 51 would seem to me, that it would stop anything if hit in the right spot.
Actually just get a SKS like this...
This is pretty much the exact stock (non folding! fuck MA.) and set up that I have and it is really the only one I hunt with. I bet I would stop a moose with that!
