Seriously. I'm on about 35 mg's of Codeine and not even that is helping. Their earlier works rank high amongst the Scandinavian metal classics, but I simply cannot get into their "depressive rock" style. For My Demons from Tonight's Decision is about as close as I can get. I find the pop/rock formula bothersome, where the verses have no riffs, and it's just Jonas singing over a simple drum beat and maybe some keys, until the chorus kicks in. This band needs to wake up!

I totally agree as well been a fan of their earlier raw stuff i find rather dificult to get into the new stuff i do enjoy it now but it took a few listens to get use to it but i have to be in the right mood for it

I love everything from this band, especially the later stuff. Last Fair Deal Gone Down is such a great album.

my favorite band ever, mainly because of the stuff they did after brave murder day. i love the early stuff too. discouraged ones, tonight's decision, and last fair deal gone down are three of my alltime favorite albums.

the only album that isn't up to snuff in my opinion is the great cold distance, which i love, but it's a step down from what they were doing before.

To me, everything after Brave Murder Day is the complete dismantling of a sound they helped pioneer. Everything from Dance of December Souls to, and especially, Brave Murder Day, are amazing. A lot of later Katatonia sounds like something I would hear on the radio. If this was any other band, I would have just written them off, but that's how much I regard their earlier years.

if you miss the old days and the newer stuff is not your thing, there are some quality bands out there still carrying the brave murder day torch (daylight dies, the morningside, just to name a couple).

Well, I have, but I haven't. I'll always appreciate early Katatonia for their songwriting skills and miserable atmospheres. Unfortunately, the later material simply cannot compare. I think the title for Discouraged Ones is fitting, because I can remember how discouraged I felt, when I first listened. People with similar musical interests have told me over the years that I need to keep listening to post BMD Katatonia, and it will someday sink in. Needless to say, that day has never arrived.

Haha, I've been missing them for years, so it's nothing new. And yes, I've heard those bands. No one can really capture that same feeling but Rapture came somewhat close. I really enjoyed the album "Futile", which had Jarno from Shape of Despair playing guitar.

I like October Tide's first album more than most older Katatonia.

i like it all. Dance of December souls was good, but not that great. Brave Murder Day is my favorite. Discourage Ones a close second. I dunno...i've always been able to pick up the same feelings and style in the "rock" albums as the "metal" albums. Anders Nystrom is one of my favorite guitar players simply because of his style. October Tide rules, but Rain without end is waaaay better than whatever the other one is called.. (I never listen to it)

I agree, it's very obviously the same band. I think some people just don't clean vocals...not manly enough I guess. I like their early stuff but I thought the vocals were kinda boring.

Their drummer is incredible too. Between the drums and the guitar tone you can spot a Katatonia song a mile away.

I listen to Rain Without End every October, along with Drudkh's Autumn Aurora and others.

Futile is an awesome record... you should also check out the slightly obscure Fallout, by Slumber (2004). A bit faster paced but some seriously excellent riffing imo.

See, I don't hear the same band at all. Newer Katatonia is formulaic, and overuses the pop/rock structures for their songs. I have no problem with clean vocals, as I obviously enjoy bands like Opeth and Novembre. Both aforementioned bands have incredible vocalists, and unfortunately Jonas simply can't compete with them. The omission of interesting melodies, miserable riffs, and harsh vocals, has caused them to lose their original aesthetic appeal.

katatonia strays further from their early stuff with each new release, but how can you not hear some of the early stuff (especially BMD) in discouraged ones and tonight's decision? There's a similar mood and similar jagged riffs.

i think their melodies have gotten more interesting and i find the clean vocals to be much more interesting than the harshes. as far as miserable riffs go, i consider discouraged ones to be their most miserable sounding album, and tonight's decision is pretty miserable also.

i personally enjoy the vocals of jonas much more than those of novembre's singer and i find them on par with akerfeldt's vocals. jonas has an understated and honest quality to his voice that isn't found often in metal. plus i'm a big fan of his lyrics.

we might not agree on all things katatonia, but at least we can agree on one thing:
mozzarella and tomato on french bread is a hell of a sandwich.

News -June 09

The recording of Resonance has been re-set to October 5th - November 15th.
It will be recorded at the isolated sphere of "Panic Room Studios" in Skara as the last album. This time though, we have twice the time and much more knowledge. The album will shine !!

Although it was pretty ironic listening to Tomi Ullgren bitch about them backstage while we were getting hammered, because they sounded like "fuckin katatonia shit"
