This is a great read, even if you're a lazy liberal.
Experiment in Socialism
An economics professor at Texas Tech said he had never failed a single student before but had, once, failed an entire class. The class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism."
All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A. After the first test the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. But, as the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided that since they could not make an A, they studied less. The second Test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around the average was an F.
The scores never increased as bickering, blame, name calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for anyone else. All failed to their great surprise and the professor told them that socialism would ultimately fail because the harder people try to succeed the greater their reward but when a government takes all the reward away; no one will try or succeed.

Interesting read and point, but I have a hard time believing this happened. If he had failed the whole class then he'd be fired immediately.
Either way, I would have taken an interest in the subject regardless of what my grade was. Being graded on shit is an outdated way of schooling IMO. |
|
lulz.
who here is saying full on socialism 'works' anyways? |

Not true...but a very good point.
|

It's the truth man...I'm not saying this with angst, but man...name one Socialist superpower that doesn't opress the shit out of its people. |
|
there are certain freedoms and liberties that we all need to survive. if they are cut short by a "higher" power (religion, government, etc.) then we are all restricted in what we do. i like to look at things on a global scale, so i'm a firm believer in the advancement of the human race. right now I feel like the human race is going nowhere except backwards. there needs to be some serious changes, not only within our own US government, but global society as well. we are holding ourselves back in more ways than one. |

Nobody...but we both know that doesn't matter. |

Not just governments; parents can do it to their kids too.
It's a point bigger than socialism versus capitalism, and honestly, capitalism has the same problem with it to some degree.
It's the problem of human groupthink, the same entropy that damns all societies: when good work is no longer recognized, apathy reigns, and then infrastructures of various sorts decay.
You need a value system in common for people to point to an action and say it's good or bad; no values are inherent -- they must be chosen, and culture is that choice.

socialism would only work if everyone was willing to work their nuts off. in that case everyone gets the A, everyone is happy and the world keeps spinning. too many slackers for socialism to work.
|
|
exactly, communism and socialism work in theory, but you have to remove the human element. |
|
i am in favor of removing the human element |

I smelled much BS and was about to snopes it. |

Except that there are and always will be inherent differences in ability, so some must work more and some less, with different results...
It's the hurdle humanity must get over: inequality. One side says subsidize it, the other side says natural selection.
I'm with that second side. |
|
And here's the part that will really blow your mind, that college class...WAS SWEDEN
BUT THEN WHO WAS PHONE? |
|

So am I, and here's the thing about subsidizing inequality - natural selection always takes precedence, because there is no respect for the unequal in a higher position, and respect is the ultimate currency in the workplace and anywhere else.
Also, lol at people crying socialism at public health care.

actually, socialism is more like a "curve" grading system and that's what I know for a fact is being used at Harvard.
good job posting internet chain letters as "proof" of anything, though |
|
oh snap, you just got called gay by a girl.
I'm going to go send out some emails that fb, myspace, aim, and icq are going to start sharging per message. |

There's different types of curve grading. If your job is to teach a really hard science class, you can make the material be as difficult as you want, and then normalize with a curve.
That's distinct from flat curving, which is where you try to fit everyone into a narrow range so there are no radical variations -- more like compression.
I do agree grade inflation at the Ivies is out of control, as it is in most top colleges. Affirmative action and helicopter parenting at work, among other things. |

yeah but that doesnt matter. even if the world was full of brian surgeons you'd still be fucked because you need the guy to come in after and mop the floor. the first problem is telling the guy he has to mop the floor, the second is getting the brian surgeon to keep working his high stress, highly skilled job to earn the same pay as that janitor. |

I think the brain surgeon should be paid more, but not excessively more.
I think the Finnish model -- where the guy mopping the floor is not radically dumber than the brain surgeon, and is not paid radically less -- is a good answer here.
Finland has a very tight IQ spread -- for the indigenous population, most people are within five IQ points or so of each other. |

Who are these bewildering talking head fossils? |
|
Bill Maher is such an idiot. Please don't subscribe to his hollywood jew bullshit... |
|
Bill Maher is anything but an idiot. |
|
Such an idiot hook nosed jew. Listen to this assclown...
I wonder what plan he has aside from brainwashing the rest of this media soaked nation aside from making himself money? I'm sure that he's certainly intelligent enough to run the country better than the HNIC right now.
You want to idolize hollywood stars? Try idolizing the one's that fought for this country in WWII....they were real men and women. Not the crybaby pussies we have now.
Audie Murphy
Jimmy Stewart
Charlton Heston
Lee Majors
All decorated veterans who fought for this country, not against it internally and through the media.
Bill Maher is a cunt.
|
|
|
Bill Maher is such an idiot. |
He doesn't strike me as being as lucid as David Brooks or Samuel Huntington.
I wonder if any of these talking heads read and understood Democracy in America. |
