I've been trying to get my backup system set.
I decided to add up my hard drives
6x1.5TB seagate
2x750GB seagate
2x1.5TB western digital
3x2TB western digital
1x1TB western digital
8x500GB random drives

that's not including drives in computers.
24+TB? whoah...

I have western digital passport 250GB, buying another one with 500GB with my fall school refund. It's almost full.

I blame the baby...I take a lot of pictures.

Personally around 2 TB.

If you threw away some of your duplicate photos you probably wouldn't need so much space...

2 x 2tb raid1 / wd
2 x 750gb raid 1 / samsung
3 x 750gb backup / stupid seagate
1 x 150gb os / wd raptor

um.. what? That reads like a midget saying "why am I so tall". 250GB = my pictures since january. Not including film scans.

yeah, lord knows you only need one coy of your pictures.
I have one copy at work and 2 copies at home (one online and one off line).

I wasn't counting OS's or my passports. I have 2 250GB wd passports and 1 250GB freeagent.

my configuration is
QNAP 639pro:
3x2TB wd RAID 5 (photos/vidoes/torrents)
2x1.5TB seagate, 1x1.5TB RAID 5 (programs/mp3s/pc backups/unsorted)

DROBO
1.5TB WD
1.5TB seagate
1TB wd
750GB seagate
The drobo is a back up synch of my QNAP. I want to swap out the 750GB seagate with another 1.5TB seagate, but there is a known lock up issue with the drobo when you introduce a second 1.5TB shitgate. I'm waiting for fw CC1G to come out befor I do that.

Then I have 3x1.5TB seagates that sit in cavlry 2xJBOD USB
http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?M=CA...RY_STORAGE_EN-CAHDD2B-ZB&ID=4056788
I got them for like $20 each. I turn those on once a month and synch with the QNAP. Currently, they just have my photos on them.

Right now, I have a few 500GB just sitting around. I also have a copy of my pictures on some 500GB at work cause I haven't finished organization and synching the DROBO.

yeah, I was somewhere talking about back ups and thought about adding it up. I haven't added them up since I was around 8TB. This also don't count carina's HDs.

weird those look about as different as different can be. Plus if I then deleted 2 pictures out of 500, that would mean that I would only need 23.990TB instead of 24TB.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 29,2009 2:03pm
those images were also take 5 minutes apart. sucked cause I had to re-set everything up and have everyone get back in the same pose.

toggletoggle post by porphyria at Jul 29,2009 2:03pm
yeah, so different........I would keep the second one / trash the first.

okay, I'm not going to go through your 8 billion photos but I bet you could narrow it down to at lest half as keepers.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 29,2009 2:06pm
If I were to do that, there would be less than 2 pictures per 3-4 concerts.

toggletoggle post by dertoxia   at Jul 29,2009 2:25pm
i think that now we're at a point where 1TB is less than $100.....why delete anything, ever? Rev is a special case, most people would never ever need that much storage. But when an average joe can go out and without too much cash come home with a 4TB redundant array...what's the point of deleting stuff?

But i do look forward to checking back on this post in 10 years and say "how the hell did we manage with drives under 1 petabyte?"

when i got my first DVD burner i thought it was the coolest thing ever. 4.7GB on one disc?!?! no way! Somewhere i have a booklet of 100 DVD's all organized by category. I thought it was a massive amount of storage. But if the discs are all full (they're not) then that's only 470GB.
