?? really? (Unless by "fake" you're referring to the fact that they didn't really have anything to do with the music they played.. which we will ignore) cause i'd always heard people refer to them, the ramones, the new york dolls, the damned, joy division, and the Clash as ones that paved the way. While they don't sound like "modern punk" they still did help make it... right?

They're to punk what AC/DC is to heavy metal, so they did influence it but a lot of people want to get away from that axis of the genre's sound. I used to own "Never Mind..." but let it pass on into the aether after getting bored with it a few weeks later.

Are they really that indie? If yes then wow, way to kill of the last remnants of your dying industry, major labels!

Did it ever occur to top execs that the people shopping at indie stores are probably more interested in the music scene and supporting the sale of music in the long run? I guess we knew all along that big business was all about numbers, but way to rub it in everyone's face.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Aug 4,2009 3:04pm
What about that BU student that's getting sued for millions of dollars for downloading off of Kazaa?

They're trying to find any excuse they can possible to justify the lack of sales and dictate who should buy their music.
Granted, most people DL stuff off of the internet or iTunes these days, but still. Music is an art form, and sadly, the music that is popular today is absolute crap and appeals to an audience of 15 year olds, or washed up Kevin Millar worshiping sweatpants wearing 32 year old women (only nickelback) - the prime suspects in downloading music these days.

toggletoggle post by Beorht-Dana  at Aug 4,2009 3:07pm
I guess it depends on what you mean by indie. They do have like 26 locations in New England but the company is privately owned.

After reading that stark magazine response article I don't think it will have any effect on NC. It'll suck for the real hole-in-the-wall type places though.

toggletoggle post by |an  at Aug 4,2009 3:13pm
26 locations is definitely some serious volume. That would be a seriously dick move.

TBH, most hole in the wall places I knew the owners of were dying for at least the last 10 years, and most owners closed up shop and moved to internet sales of vinyl. Sad, but probably smart. Too bad they couldn't hold out, vinyl seems to be making a comeback, albeit at slightly ridiculous prices.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Aug 4,2009 3:19pm
only slightly ridiculous...the logic is re-sale value is amazing on a lot of vinyl....I buy my records to listen to, though. So it's annoying.

toggletoggle post by |an  at Aug 4,2009 3:23pm
Well, my reasoning led me to understand that the longer-format and higher-quality of recording these days necessitates multiple and better quality records, which is understandable. Also the artwork and packaging are of a much better quality, which is tops in my book. And, most decent labels include free mp3 downloads, another simple but brilliant advance. All in all, new-school vinyl rocks, but I still can't feel right about spending $25-30 on a record, that's like 5% of most people's weekly salaries. Ideally I'd be able to walk into a store and buy 2-3 records to last me the week, and a 12 pack for the weekend, and not feel horribly guilty about it. Hooray for inflation!

toggletoggle post by Beorht-Dana  at Aug 4,2009 3:27pm
Yeah vinyl is pretty expensive now but with the way sales of it are going right now I am pretty confident prices will drop as production increases.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Aug 4,2009 3:37pm

Heh, good luck with that. Record players are still pretty expensive, I think we'd need to see them make a bigger market proliferation to seriously impact the buying volume. But maybe I just haven't gone record player shopping enough lately, is this not the case?

Listen to Siamese Dream with headphones from beginning to end and you'll COMPLETELY understand.

Also Gish was great.

For a lot of us, this WAS what was available in Jr High / High School. This band was amongst the pantheon that were our important rock groups at the time.

See... this is the mentality that I don't understand. Do you actually like bands you listened to back then or do you just listen to them for nostalgic value? When I was in junior high I pretty much listened to nothing but Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Eminem and the thought of listening to those bands for any reason gives me reactions ranging from nap time to puke time. I listened to a fair amount of stuff in high school I think sucks now too. I mean, do you really have to listen to something just because you listened to it when you were younger? There are other bands I feel helped shape my music tastes today that I just can't get into as much or even at all anymore. Maybe I'm just an ungrateful bastard...

You listened to that stuff like I listened to Green Day. Green Day for me now is def a nostalgic thing.

Siamese Dream has over 30 guitar parts on it. Billy Corgan wrote that entire album and played, to the best of my knowledge, every part on it (except the drums). It was during a period where he was a complete control freak and went down to every knob turn in the mixing and dictated how it should go. That album will definitely have books about it once everyone stops writing about Nirvana at some point this century.

That said, it's a night-and-day difference. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Eminem are what's refered to categorically as "hitmakers". They, debatebly, exist to simply chart (not counting the first Korn record which was actually awesome). Smashing Pumpkins spent a long time as a labor of love in an era when Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and more "artisically" sound bands were making record labels think it was ok to dump money and bands that would craft their music. In the end, it never paid as much as Britney Spears or Michael Jackson, but it was a bit of an experiment.

I don't know if that answers your question, but maybe it gives you some info you didn't know.

They perfected Alternative Rock to the point where they put out some of the greatest albums of the 90's. Sure, Billy's voice isn't the best but it's about the arrangments he wrote. I've liked this band since I was like 9 years old and will continue to be a fan forever.

FWIW, I hated Smashing Pumpkins with a righteous fury when it showed up on the radio every five minutes, until the guitarist in my band at the time forced me to sit down and listen to the first two records. I get it, now (although it's still not something I'd listen to on my own, and the quality went in the crapper once he got rid of the band and it became the Biwwy Cowgan Expewience).

toggletoggle post by |an  at Aug 5,2009 11:55am
Understandable. Excess radio play usually makes me hate bands, especially since radio hits are generally not the most introspective material. FWIW though, the first time I saw "Today" on MTV I definitely shit myself and got their record that week. Haven't regretted that in 16 years.

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Aug 5,2009 12:55pm
Every now and then a genuine good song / good band makes its way onto the radio.

SEE: Kings of Leon, White Stripes, Black Keys, etc.

I got so sick of every White Stripes single, that fucking Black Keys song (6 AM automatic or whatever) and "Molly's Room" or whatever the fuck that KoL first single was.

Then I got their albums and these bands have genuine, incredible song writing talent. The White Stripes records became more and more in-tune with artistry and less blues albums, which was pretty rad. Kings of Leon's last record, BECAUSE OF THE TIMES, is so good I recommend everyone get it. And the Black Keys, holy shit...Dan Auerbach or whatever his name is...his solo record is the fucking bomb.

You know, I wasn't going to touch this... but I would really like for you to explain to me why you think Smashing Pumpkins is actually good, and no I'm not being sarcastic either, I really am curious as to how someone can actually like that band.
