I typically don't go to bars but if there's a cover band in one, that leads to me doing the fastest 180 out the door I can manage. Good thread.

only classic rock covers are real.

We got booked in Hoboken this past summer with a top 40 cover band, consisting of 40-something year old men who dressed like Good Charlotte and played Blink 182 and RUINED THE FUCK OUT OF BLITZKRIEG BOP.

They also played I Want You to Want Me. Etc etc etc.

theres a band like that around here called the Last Call Band. i had to sit through their set once... so bad. sooooooo bad.

There is a very simple rule when it comes to any band covering something: you can do anything you want, provided that any differences in the song from the original are at least as good or better as what was initially there.

If what a cover band changes/adds to it takes away from the song, they should just drop the changes and play the song the way it sounds; if they're not capable of doing that either, they have no business covering the song in the first place.
