"I am a former nintendo employee. That isn't in all gameboys because later in development, that part was no longer needed. It was part of the graphics subsystem but if you note your friends serial number, it will be different because a few months after production we started using a new chip that was put directly on the circuit rather than having that large additional board which was in yours (and all the other produced within the first 3 months of their release)"
