Oneiric Realm has parted ways with our bassist, Sean. He's an insanely talented musician and we wish him the best in his future endeavors. That having been said, we need to fill the position. We practice in Whitman, MA. Usually two to three days a week.
For those of you who are not familiar with our music you can check out our demo on our myspace:
Sean was no slouch on the bass and we're looking for a dedicated, technically competent bass player to fill the spot. Having own transportation and gear is preferable. Respond here if interested or e-mail us at oneiric_realm at yahoo dot com.
Duuuuuuuuuude...sorry to hear Mikey boy. Best of luck to you guys. Finding musicians that are on top of their game and actually practice on the reg is somewhat of a crapshoot.
I've got a bass, live 10 miles away, but no bass amp. slightly interested, but I'd rather work on that secret project ;-)
secret project?!?

Just an idea that me and burnsy had that hasn't come into fruition yet, although I hope it does. It involves staring at shoes for a long period of time.
We have two shows that were already booked for the end of May and beginning of June. I'd much rather not cancel so I think we're gonna just do a couple shows without. We'd also be interested in someone filling in for these shows if time constraints prevent them from joining as a permanent member. If someone was just going to fill in, our guitar player has a nice bass rig at our practice space that he probably wouldn't mind a fill-in using. Thanks for the support, gents.

black metal is not my bag usually, but I thoroughly enjoyed you guys at Bobfest a few months back

If someone can pick up your songs in the span of a couple weeks, do your best to keep them around.

Checking out the music now and wow. This is REALLY cool. And the basslines are very noticeable.
That's why I was mentioning the difficulty of the fill-in aspect, and that anyone who can get a hang of a set's worth of songs that quick is worth bribing to keep around.

sean is a ghost on bass and his basslines are haunted, gonna be hard to find someone who can compently play that bassline he wrote in the second riff of cirque de macabre. oh i remember that bassline like it was haunted..which it was/is.

Indeed. I would certainly do what I could to keep them around.

You keep talking about all these large shoes, you aint never gonna get any short guys to try out. You got a problem with small shoed bassists? I'll shove my size 5 1/2 up you anus boy!

Oh yeah, we're all short... having a tall guy could make us look bad... :-/

5 1/2?? good lord. having huge feet sucks sometimes, once you get to sizes 13, 14, and 15 they start to blend together. depending on the company i fit into any of those.

You know what they say about big feet? Big shoes, duh.
When are the shows exactly? I might be interested in filling in. I should probably try my hand at some of the songs before I promise anything though...

i suppose your right. i wouldnt pass on a solid bassist capable of playing the material well based on that sole reason though. IMO.
Not to be cruel to potential applicants, but a solid bassist should be able to play these parts with their fingers.
I'd disagree. If their music would sound good with picked bass, I woulda volunteered to help them out myself. Sean's attack is a big part of Oneric's sound. I'd rather you re-write the basslines than use a pick.
post by FuckIsMySignature at May 9,2011 11:59am edited May 9,2011 12:00pm
fair enough. i'm only speaking hypothetically anyways. i only wish i had more time available to try out for a project like this. FUUUU WORRK!!!
I wasn't arguing anything. Either technique is equally valid. It's not like there is anything you can do with fingers you can't do with a pick or vice versa (aside from slap obviously). It's a matter of tone. Some people prefer one or the other. If Mike and the other dudes in OR prefer to get a bassist who plays with his fingers that is their prerogative since it is their band. I think either one would sound good it the context of this band.
It doesn't matter much to me anyways. I was just offering my assistance.
the bass lines on the recordings are tough to pick up on sometimes... do you guys have any visual sort of notation for these tunes? bass parts/guitar parts/whatever?
also, your myspace doesn't have the dates for those gigs you have booked. if you can make those known, you might at the very least get someone to fill in a little easier. I would be interested in helping out for those if everything can pan out. PM me if you'd be into that. i live in "all over" massachusetts. but i have transport and gear and all that shit... best of luck
I'd rather you re-write the basslines than use a pick.
I don't see how what you would prefer has anything to do with this since you are not a member of the band lol.
Oh, my preferences are irrelevant to what the band chooses. I was simply listening to your clips, reading your post that you haven't even listened to the songs, and hinting that you may be offering to fill a slot SLIGHTLY outta your league and style.
If they do require a pickless bassist Staples should do it. Khed is fahkin awesome.
I have suggested this repeatedly. Staples is one helluva busy dude, but his style fits this band like no other I could think of. He'd really be perfect for it.
And again, I got nothing against picks. And I'm not picking on Dana. He'd be great for other shit, like my OWN material for starters. I just think his sound/style is not a match for OR. They're not a typical Black Metal sound, if they were I wouldn't be listening to em.

Uh, you need to read again. I never said I haven't listened to the songs. I've listened to their demo a lot since it came out a few months ago and seen them at least a couple times. What I was saying was that I hadn't actually tried learning anything yet. The point being that I wasn't sure if I could learn everything in the time between now and their next show.
Really, I'm not sure why I need to defend myself to you since what you think doesn't matter at all.
none of this should really matter in black metal at all. personally OR has more death metal aesthetic than BM aesthetic, but that's just my opinion. It's still great.
if this disagreement gets escalated about how finger playing is better than pick playing (in most cases it is) in relation to a BLACK METAL sound, then I'm retiring from rttp and shaking my head in disgust.

Yes, I hear a lot in there. I was talking to Mike, and he told me the different bands that all the members are into - it's a crazy mix of influences. But Mike alone is into more styles and shit than most people I know. It shows in his writing. Evil circus metal for the win!
you can still post in retirement. youre just sitting on a hypothetical beach with you legs kicked back, all while chuckling to yourself about all the newbs in the music scene here and being an elitist asshole.

Actually, the argument isn't about better.
It's about what applies to the situation. This band uses fingerpick. It's a temp offer, from a player that doesn't finger pick. That's all I tried to point out, and it turned into an insult to his bassist pride. Odd, because all you have to do is listen to my own shitty bass playing to know I love using a pick.

I figured you'd retire to a cave, in the frostbitten nether realms of some mountain in a forest surrounded by fields of your own crops and reefer supplies.
Im not a real bassist, so I use a pick too. I practice with fingers, but mostly love experimenting with slap style. The beauty of bass is about the different styles which can be applied, you're right.
About black metal, though; I usually don't give a fuck, unless otherwise specified with other genres in the sound.

Metal is not a democracy. You don't get a vote just because you can breathe.
I never said I "get a vote". I never implied it either. In fact, I think I clearly stated my opinion DOESN'T matter to the band. That's twice you've said the same thing.
Doesn't mean the people that get votes might not draw the same conclusions about your playing I did.
It kills time, and keeps the thread bumped to the benefit of all. Nothing wrong with beating a breathing horse. Even if it is unconscious, and missing an eye.
1) make an rttp thread related to black metal
2) don't ask for anyone's opinion
3) aril gives his opinion and then says he doesn't care/threatens to quit rttp
4) PROFIT
Vouching, for me, comes from my ears. And my ears only have Dreaded Silence to go on.
Dana filled in with coffin birth for some shows a few months back and handled that. They're a much more technical band than we are, so if you had seen dana with them you'd know he can play more technically challenging basslines.
A shitstorm erupting in a thread AFTER my posts. This is a new one.
But I'd say Dana's plenty capable...and what-the-fuck-ever about the pick thing, it's a temp gig.

oh fuck! This is terrible news, Sean is a awesome player! I love OR but I strongly doubt I'd be able to do it.
3 bands + 2 jobs + 1 girlfriend = staples being wicked busy
Whoa, quite a bit has happened in my absence. Thanks for the offer, Dana. We have have found someone to play these shows/possibly continue on with us as a permanent member. I will certainly keep you in mind in the future if we need a fill in, I know you're a good bassist.
As far as fingers vs. pick, I offer the following: While I'm generally more impressed with bassists that use their fingers and have previously considered the bass to be meant as a finger picked instrument, my original post saying that we're looking for a dedicated, technically competent bass player does not specify finger picking or using a pick. I expect the new bassist to NOT play what Sean played. He wrote some pretty nasty bass lines, most notably in Cirque de Macabre and Ode to the Sleep Machines, but I expect the next bass player to have a different perspective and therefore write different bass lines. Sean wrote the lyrics for Of Gravity and Decay, and I will be writing new lyrics before we play that song live again/record the track.
In response to Aril, I don't agree that we have more of a death metal aesthetic, while I do realize you've basically only heard that 4 song demo. While we most certainly have elements of death metal in our tunes, I've always approached writing from a black metal foundation then expanding into other styles. A lot of our stuff, as most of you are familiar, really isn't even to be considered black metal. Brendan from OT and I have discussed this and he's dubbed us "weird metal." I'm strangely comfortable with that.
We're pumped about all the support we've received from you guys and look forward to playing our new material for you. We're continuing to find our sound with each new song we write and we think you'll enjoy them.
In closing, as previously stated, we may have found someone to step in to play bass for us but I'd like to keep auditions open a little longer for the sake of healthy competition. Hit me up if you're interested in coming down!
Nice. Glad to hear you found someone. Like I said, I couldn't have really committed to being a permanent member so it's good you have someone with whom that might be a possibility. Keep on kicking ass dudes.

this.
it's just typical that anytime a band has anything remotely close to black metal as an influence they are immediately thrown in as just another black metal band.
OR always struck me as having Death Metal influences, regardless of whether or not they play constant meedalies and chug chugs, it makes things more interesting than what you might consider to be a cookie cutter vesion of black metal
There isn't much, but I remember watching them at the last show they played at Ralphs and they had one song in particular that had a section that sounded more dm influenced than anything else

btw, i wasnt posting that in means to attack you, but i was reading through this thread and thought you changed your mind. i may not know you very well but i know you're too opinionated to changed your mind on something like that. so i couldnt help myself, had to point it out haha

glad to see you guys have found a replacement tho! i know someone who is a huge fan of yours that would love to try out on bass if you guys are still holding auditions. let me know if you want and ill give you their contact info.

Yeah I know exactly the part you're talking about it's a straight up dm part for sure. My opinion on our dm influences has already been stated.
Hahaha generic realm. We said that pretty close to the inception of the band and haven't heard it since. Autocorrect wins again.
I would like to OFFICIALLY announce that we have found the new bassist for Oneiric Realm; Kate Hale. I'm sure a lot of you know her, and like me, I'm sure many of you had no idea that she plays bass. She impressed the hell out of us all in her audition and we're looking forward to working with her.
Big thanks to Alx_Casket for stepping up and playing our last two shows with us on short notice.
We'll be taking a break from shows for a month or two as we solidify the lineup and finish some new material we've been working on. We'll have what we think you'll find to be pleasant surprises upon our return to the stage.
Goes without saying, but it was my pleasure playing with you guys and I wish you best of luck with the surprises you have in store.
I'll be continuing with Closed Casket as we finish our long-awaited full length, and intend to start playing out with my side project Barren Oak later this year.

i also hear your new bassist is "a dick in an asshole"

BASEMENTUM high priest LORD SINISTER VON DOOMENSTEIN announces his displeasure with this gyno-syncophant poser band ONEIRIC REALM (or should I say, ONEIRIC SMELL-M) and their estrogenous leanings. ASMORDIAN KALM is a fellow elite warrior, many a time have we met in noble combat; on several occasions his Primeval Titan has bested my Black Lotus. FULL SUPPORT, BRETHREN
Well, I'm glad you'd all like to be "elite" and bad mouth my music before you hear me. All you have "against" me is I'm a woman who plays bass and you apparently don't like that. So be your pussy self somewhere where its appreciated by you and your elite buddy buddy pals because no one here cares.
This band is now OFFICIALLY the trendiest local band. Burns is nothing but a trendwhore who eats trendy Greek Salads at Christo's in Brockton. I once sharted out the Commuter Rail door in his general direction.
Having a girl in the band now, eh? asmordian kalm trollfag is right. FUCK THIS BAND. GIRLS CAN'T BE MUSICIANS. Wait, are bass players musicians? lul!
I don't see what the big deal is. Nobody has ever had a problem with nachzehrer having a girl for a signer. Granted she does have a beard, but she's still a lady.

I see you and Mikes relationship as friends hasn't change.. fuckin great.
Burnsy should start wearing a hat ala Stian Aaarstad.

Generally speaking, female musicians, given the ratios that actually play in bands, are often an untapped underrated resource, under the theory that anytime half the population is heavily underrepresented there's a vacuum of potential talent that could be there but isn't.
ITT we thus learn that dick may be bro, but also that chick is sis. Or something.
My only complaint to Kate is that she didn't get this job by first posting a reply thread called "Oneiric Bassist Seeks Realm". I think we were all waiting for that punchline.
That's such a one sided battle why would you even suggest that? Everybody knows that Pikachu is an electric type and Gyrados is a water type, therefore any all electric type moves will be super effective (4x stronger) than they would normally be. DUH.
apparently you guys haven't seen the angry black guy loves pokemon video. i would fuck the shit out of jiggly puff, and make the bitch sing to me: "JIIIIIIIIGGLY PUUUUUUF SUCK A MEAN NIGGA DICK!"
