New site? Maybe some day.

I'm looking to finish the room above my garage -- my current home office is a glorified closet. The garage is separate from the house, maybe 100 to 150ft away. We have DSL (no cable in the woods), and have a wireless router in the house. According to my provider (TDS), I would have to go to my town and get involved in some type of clusterfuck if I want to add another DSL line for the garage room -- something to do with FCC regs, 911, etc. Fuck going to the town, those cunts will just jack up my already-too-high taxes. Plus, I'd have to pay for the additional DSL line monthly, which is gay in itself.
Anyway, I know there are outdoor routers, boosters, and so on. Can any of you nerds recommend a useful product that will allow my wireless signal to extend down to the garage?
In B4 system 32 folder deletion and barrel rolls... |

too bad you can't afford my companies wireless AP. they are $700 to $2700 on ebay. |
|
Can I afford it? Yes. Do I want to shell out that kind of cake, absolutely not. |
|
all you need is a wireless N router in your house and you should be able to go up to 70m. The only thing is that when the wind blows hard, you might not have a signal or it will drop. I can go ask the wireless team for the best consumer wireless router if you want. I would also put the AP in your house as close to the garage as possible and on the second floor if possible.
Also, do the garage have a separate electric line going to it from the street? or does the electricity come from the house? |
|
do you have more than one device in your garage that you want hooked to the net? |
|
I'm guessing that the wireless router/AP in your house will be just under $100 and then a bridge for your office will be $60
|
|
what is your garage made of? brick or wood? |
|
rev's got this one. i was just gonna say "pringles can" ...and yes, fuck going through town. |

Possibly up to 2 laptops. |

Yeah, it doesn't look like a huge investment, I just want to be sure to get the right set-up. |

Wood with vinyl siding. Heh, wood... |

Or go all out and have TWO pringles cans with a string attached. |

ok, I just went down there and talked with them. There is a guy that does this sort of thing for companies.
1) almost any wireless router will work. I would get one of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124415
2) a wireless bridge that supports a/b/g/n which I wasn't able to find a good one right this second.
there, you have spent around $200 on a wireless network. I would say get your place/office set up and then order this equipment so that you can be sure it works before the return policy is up.
Also, another thing to consider, $20 is usually the cost per month for a cell-hotspot if you have cell service in your area. |
|
Wow, a diagram and everything! Thanks dude, I shall go forth and prosper... |
|
nice. get out there and get shooting. |
|
Aril invented the triple post but the rev perfected it. |
