Saturday: Fleshtized: i wasn't too familiar with their music (as was 98% of the bands that were on this bill) but i had read good reviews of their previous work and was looking forward to seeing them. they had a very good stage presence, especially the singer, and their set sounded very tight.

Internal Suffering: i've come to the conclusion that South America produces some pretty good death metal bands, including Internal Suffering. good set

Neuraxis: i didn't know what to expect from these guys but they turned out to be pretty damned good. looking at them you'd think they were a band along the lines of Dark Tranquility but they were brutal as fuck. can't wait to listen to their cd that i got

Brodequin: A.K.A. Boredaquin. these guys didn't get me going at all. they barely moved and their music was only ok. as for the vocals, ok i obviously understand the use of low end vocals in death metal and that you can't understand what they are saying the majority of the time. but what most other death metal bands do that Brodequin doesn't, is distinguish between words. when it sounds like the only thing u are saying is "ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" then that sucks.

Malignancy: hey guess what guys, it's not a Massachusettes rule that this band has to have their set cut short, it's everywhere they play. but other than that they were good as always

Profanity: this Polish death metal band stayed at the same hotel as i did and i conversed with them throughout the entire weekend. very nice guys and they had the music to back them up too. very good stage precence, good sound, and excellent musicians. it was their first show ever in the U.S. and they got a great response.

Leng T'che: these guys were the highlight of saturday night for me. i fuckin love this joke grindcore band. the singer came out dressed as a ninja and had 2 microphones, one for unprocessed highs, and another for pitch-shifted lows. this band rules. the ninja was in the crowd more than he was on-stage. and they played I Know Where You Shit Last Summer so i was happy.

Pig Destroyer: fuckin destroyed (no pun intended) i can see why they don't have a bassist, they don't need one.

Phobia: while musically, they were only ok, politically i liked them alot. in between songs the singer kept talking about how much he hated george bush (he'd make a great addition to this message board) and at one point got on top of the P.A. speakers and ripped down the american flag, speaking how true freedom and patriotism has nothing to do with a damn flag, but with your heart and what u believe in.

Rotten Sound: Derek Roddy's got nothing on this Grindcore band's drummer. holy fucking christ. i was on the 2nd level watching this band and literally me and about 8 other ppl were just staring at the drummer with our jaws open the whole time. this guy is so fast but also so skilled and technical. i don't even care how they were musically!!! lol, it was all about the drums.

Repulsion: while many people were looking forward to their comeback show, they did nothing for me.

Sunday: Biolich: pretty good set. young guys. they definately have potential but i'd reconsider their use of clean guitars at certain points because it doesn't fit in well

Circle Of Dead Children: It's CODC, i mean come on, can u expect any less than awesome from them?

Man Must Die: Scottish death metal. i liked them though no one else i came with did. i guess they were too melodic for some people's liking.

Arsis: ok, great guitarist, pretty good riffs, decent vocals, good drumming, BORING BASSIST. he barely moved and that shit just pisses me off so much. LIVE SHOWS ARE ALL ABOUT THE STAGE PRESENCE!!!!!! how do u expect the crowd to get into it if you aren't into it?

Mortal Decay: while i missed most of their set because i was busy getting ready to play, what i did see and hear was pretty good. but a big thanks to them for lending Dehumanized their guitar cabinets

Dehumanized: i gotta say we had an awesome time when we took the stage. i was quite happy with the sound, and i luckily did not get stage fright, lol. for those of you who don't know, this was my first performance on stage EVER!!! i won't give the set list because some of you will find out come this saturday at Northern Lights. we had a great crowd response and i was totally happy with everything.

Misery Index: unfortunately one of their sloppiest sets ever. i guess Kevin Talley had been out of the loop too long. that and the soundguy had a lot of trouble figuring out how to turn up the volume on the guitars (why are sound guys so stupid????)

Vomit Remnants: me and matt (guitars/vocals Kalopsia) hung out with these guys all weekend. fuckin cool as shit. their big fans of Kalopsia and Dehumanized. they destroyed the crowd with their sick breakdowns. i can't wait to eventually play shows with these guys.

after VR we left the show to drive home that night. overall i could not have asked for a better weekend. i'll never forget it

hey I didn't read that whole thing but did one of these bands have a 16 year old kid on guitar? My friend's uncle was talking to me about them...

I'm so pissed I missed Repulsion. At least tell me their bassist still used that insane guitar distortion.

toggletoggle post by Kalopsia   at Jun 1,2004 11:13pm
taste of cigarettes i think you might be talking about Biolich, because all of those guys are pretty young. and dissector, yes the bassist used distortion

toggletoggle post by TheGreatSpaldino   at Jun 1,2004 11:23pm
gross... distorted bass sucks.

Yes. I love Repulsion's bass sound.

Pre-show:

Missed Copremesis, Biloich and Amoebic Dysentary because traffic sucked on the way down to MD.

Psyopus: Awesome as usual, especially depending on the circumstances (vocalist overcoming strep throat, etc). If you haven't seen these guys live yet you really need to check them out. . . their live show explains the full length cd more I think.

Brainwash: Pretty cool band from Italy. . . 3 piece (vocals, guitar, drums). Brutal stuff, singer has an amazing voice.

Missed Burnt by the Sun 'cause everyone was tired.

Saturday:

Swarm of the Lotus: Only caught the last 2 or 3 songs, but from what I saw was damn good except for some vocal parts sounding a little weird compared to the recordings. I wish I could have seen their whole set.

Fleshtized: Boring. Didn't really do any thing new and exciting, pretty generic for a band of that nature.

Internal Suffering: Solid set, I really dig their new stuff. They also said something about recording their new cd with Erik Rutan, so that should be interesting. Big fight broke out towards the end of their set in the pit. Oh, the drama.

Neuraxis: Awesome. Really cool stage presence, and the music is really interesting. I am really into the melodic parts mixed with the Suffocation-esque parts. Solid band, solid set. The new cd Willowtip put out from them is definitely worth the money.

Brodequin: I unfortuentely missed them due to the fact I was starved. I heard mixed reviews, some people hated them some people said they were awesome.

Bile: This band features 2 members from Inhume. I really dug their set. . . catchy goregrind with the pitchshifted vocals. Simple and brutal. Nothing mind-blowing, but cool hang-out and bob-your-head music.

Malignancy: An awesome set that was unfortunetly cut short. These guys are doing amazing things (musically speaking) for death metal and grind. The material off of 'Cross Species Transmutation' is some of the most over the top stuff I've heard. It was really disapointing that their set was roughly 20 minutes.

Profanity: Booooooo. I would have liked these guys a lot better if they played for 20 minutes, but they ended up playing for what seemed like an eternity. I could have sworn the singer said it was there last song yet proceded to play like 4 more 5 minute songs. They are really talented, but I feel they are lacking a lot in creativity.

Leng Tch'e: Stole Saturday night for me by far. These guys had the Thunderdome going apeshit. One of the best live performances I've ever seen. . . so much energy and was a lot of fun to watch. These guys are going to get huge. The guy who sings for Aborted is the drummer in this band.

Pig Destroyer: Good set, although I was disapointed a bit. They played a ton of new stuff which was mind blowing, plus really tight versions of some oldies but their stage presence. . . well, there wasn't any. They are great musicians and all, but it just seemed like they weren't thrilled in the least bit about being there. What a downer.

I unfortunetly missed Phobia, Rotten Sound, and Repulsion. I heard really good things about Rotten Sound.

Sunday:

Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus: This band rules. They had a couple copies of their new cd that I just missed on purchasing (they sold out fairly quick). Realy cool performance, really interesting music. The new lineup sounds a lot tighter and a lot more techinical. Very cool.

Biolich: Real cool band. I've never heard a band that sounds like these guys. I was really into the clean/ambient passages they had, and their drummer's blast beat was fucking cool. I'm sure everyone will hear mnore about these guys in the coming months. Real different stuff.

Circle of Dead Children: Cool set, especially if you're into CODC. I really really like their new stuff off the Human Harvest cd. Their vocalist is really impressive too. Cool set.

Man Must Die: My least favorite band on the fest. The had a weird tough-guy stage presence which would have been more tolerable if their music was any good. I just didn't like them at all.

Arsis: These guys are awesome and their songs are just so damn catchy. The vocalist/guitarist had the best sounding guitar all weekend too, everything sounded clean and clear. If you're into really catchy melodic metal check these guys out.

Mortal Decay: I would have liked them a bit more if they played a shorter set. They were pretty good I suppose, but easily forgettable.

Dehumanized: These guys were great. Really tight set, stand-outs for me were "Fade Into Obscurity" and "Prophecies Foretold". I'm really looking forward to seeing the Albany crowd go off when they play Northern Lights this Saturday. I have a feeling their pit is going to be ridiculous.

Misery Index: I love these guys, I just wish I could have heard more guitars. Otherwise a pretty well-rounded set. They should have played longer.

Vomit Remnants: Holy brutal, Batman! These guys were so damn heavy. The triggering system the drummer used sounded insanely good live, and the vocalists high pitched screams were inhuman. Really cool and energetic set.

Rompeprop: This band is great! Catchy goregrind with hillarious stories behind their songs. I'm glad they replaced Last Days of Humanity actually. . . yeah they're that good. They covered "Boneyard" by Impetigo too.

The Red Chord: These guys sounded really tight live. I didn't know who was playing drums for them but he was impressive. Solid set with a big pile-on for "Dreaming In Dog Years" at the end.

Macabre: One of the best sets all weekend. They had the Zodiac and Albert Fish come out at various times during their set, and played all the classics. The new stuff off of "Murder Metal" is really cool too. I'd like to check them out on tour playing a longer set.

Inhume: These guys are so energetic on stage, it's great. They are grindcore in the truest sense of the form. I don't think they slowed down once for about 30 minutes during this set, and the 2 singers did simultaneous jump-kicks at various times throughout the set. Hopefully the Rev will catch some pictures of this at the Mass show tonight.

Exhumed: Played a great, great set. If you're a fanof Exhumed you'd have liked this set, they played a couple songs off of each cd including the Hemdale split. Their new album is great too, and I was able to purchase it for only $5. Awesome

This weekend was awesome... hopefully people who missed it get to go next year.

toggletoggle post by Dissector   at Jun 2,2004 9:45pm
That's so awesome that Romperprop covered Boneyard. That's one of my favorite Impetigo song, next to every other song they wrote.

What songs did Exhumed play off In The Name Of Gore?

toggletoggle post by El Justin at Jun 2,2004 11:46pm
If you mean Anatomy is Destiny, they played 'In The Name of Gore', 'A Song For The Dead', 'The Matter of Splatter', and 'Under the Knife'. . . but then again I just purchased the the cd and am really only familiar with about 5 songs anyways.

toggletoggle post by El Justin at Jun 2,2004 11:49pm
By the way Brainwash played the actually fest to in place of Psyopus who were supposed to play in place of Ion Dissonance. . . they were better the second day I think as opposed ot the pre-fest show.

toggletoggle post by Paul FOD at Jun 3,2004 12:27am
Mortal decay easily forgettable??? bro have you heard any of their shit on cd. Classic brutal death metal. Maybe they sucked live I dont know , but mortal decay has probably some of the most memorable songs in DM.

MORTAL DECAY are so under-rated. Them and DEHUMANIZED were the best US bands at the MDF.
