have you tried popping it open and tapping the hard drive while restarting? The arm might just be stuck. My ipod was diagnosed as dead by the apple store, and I kept it alive for like a year and a half by doing that.
of course if you are just looking for an excuse to get a solid state ipod.....

6th gen iPods and beyond are next to impossible to open up. At some point Apple figured out that they actually built an easily fixable-upgradeable product and put an end to it right away.
Mine just died too. Bought a Sansa Fuze+ and a 32GB microSDHC for 48GB total for about $130 total. The Fuze+ has a really good headphone amp. Much better than the iPod's could ever be. Look into it SON
