Is there any way to make MT shows start at 830 in lieu of 930? I realize it's probably an unfeasable question due to the amount of shows that have been played and tradition, but 930 is brutal for us old folks that live far away and have to get up for work the next day at 530.
just a thought, although I already know the answer is no. Just wondering if Ralph's won't allow it before 930 or if it's a personal decision.

sincerely,
Ron Paul

I think they do it so the first band actually has an audience, as is typically done. What would be the rationale for the bar not allowing it to start earlier?

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Dec 29,2011 11:47am
I'm sure I'm not the only one to have skipped shows because they go on too late. Then again, I live over an hour away so it's not really a valid point.
I would imagine it'd depend on the show, but there'd be loyal Worcesterites there by 8. Ive noticed that it seems people start clearing out by midnight.

toggletoggle post by Samantha at Dec 29,2011 11:52am
Generally, the sound guy, bartender, and door guy/bouncer aren't there until around 8:00pm. Even though the bar downstairs is open earlier, the upstairs isn't open until later in the evening. As far as I know, the 9:30 start time works because it gives staff at the bar enough time to set up... although, I think Chris maaayyy have done a show or two in the past that started at 9:00? Chris??

I think an 8:30 start time would require staff to either come in early or be in a rush to set up.... And I dare anyone to tell Yosh he has to come in to work early. Ha ha! See what happens.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Dec 29,2011 11:54am
Ok, thanks. Thats what I figured. Ive been there before at 730ish and barely anyone was there for staff.

toggletoggle post by Samantha at Dec 29,2011 11:57am
Yep. Even at 8:30, there are barely any people there.

I do agree with Aril. I would be more likely to come to MTs if they started earlier, but I understand.

toggletoggle post by sigh at Dec 29,2011 12:04pm
As someone who also lives over an hour away I can certainly attest to the suckery that is getting up the next day for work after a MT show.

toggletoggle post by DYA is 12 at Dec 29,2011 12:07pm
Contrast this with the true science fact that absolutely no one actually IN worcester is gonna show up before 9. You may as well just book one less band, in that case.

I can elaborate further when I have more time, but 9:30 just works out best when considering all factors involved. Consider that the bands need to arrive an hour earlier for load-in, and the vast majority of bands that play MT are not from Worcester, and a lot are from out-of-state. I know a lot of the Boston bands have to hustle just to arrive for 8:30, with traffic and whatnot. Also with 4 bands on a show you're dealing with 15-20+ individuals and more often than not, they all aren't able to arrive at the same time because of work, school, etc. After nearly 150 MT shows I've seen it all. 9:30 is the earliest "safe" start time in my opinion. And I would tend to disagree with the "clearing out at midnight" statement as a rule. It depends on who is playing and who brought the most fans. If an earlier band brought 25 work friends and family members to see their first show or something, chances are a bunch of them are going to leave early. But you bring up valid points.

toggletoggle post by Mark R forgot password at Dec 29,2011 12:22pm
The lower-billed bands are what I consider most when I'm deciding to go see a MT show. I have to miss the closing band about half the time. I like that sometimes the headliner plays second-to-last, like the Monarque show.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Dec 29,2011 12:22pm edited Dec 29,2011 12:23pm
Haha, I should have elaborated on that midnight statement. It depends on the show and the bands, but most out-of-townies like me start clearing out, it seems. I can understand your reasoning on 930, regardless.

here is a solution: just go to work tired and hungover after a fun night at Ralph's.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Dec 29,2011 12:48pm
Ive done that solution many times. It's not working.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Dec 29,2011 12:51pm

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Dec 29,2011 12:52pm
Ok, i'll drive home drunk. Sounds awesome.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Dec 29,2011 12:56pm
or you could just cut yourself off by 11ish and then sober up until you leave.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Dec 29,2011 12:57pm
or you can store the beer in your head and swallow it when you get home, then sleep like a babybm.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Dec 29,2011 12:59pm
That's what I end up doing; I don't get drunk when I have to drive. Too many bad experiences/close calls. I dont know how you guys do it, but I cant fuck around with that anymore. It's not worth it.

for me, it's a double-edged sword. getting up in the morning the next day sucks, but because i live an hour away, i'd be more likely to miss a band or two if it started earlier. also, if my band was playing first or second and the show started early, i'd be rushing to make it there on time.

a band JUST starting at MIDNIGHT on a work night is kinda ridiculous.

I would absolutely refuse to headline if I knew that meant playing at midnight, with and hour drive after the gig on a work night. (an hour to pack up after you play, an hour drive home, an hour to put all the gear away at our practice space etc)...

in bed by 3am?

F THAT.

lol that would be nice. its hard for me to judge because i live 5 minutes from ralphs and usually have no idea how i got home.

toggletoggle post by MetalThursday  at Dec 29,2011 2:58pm
Last I checked we've never put a gun to anyone's head and forced them to do anything. If a band doesn't like the time slot offered, we try to compromise, otherwise they are free to say no to the show, or we'll try to offer another date. And people always stay for Scaphism, because they put on a fucking great show every time and everyone knows it by now. They have never complained once about headlining a show. I believe they were a little iffy the first time, and it ended up being a fucking insane night with a pit and crazy shit going right until the end. On a freezing cold shitty February night.

In some ways, I envy that. Round trip, its nearly a 3 hour drive added up for me. There are multiple solutions though, like moving closer or getting a job where I dont have get up so early.
this thread wasnt made as a complaint against MT, just an idea to start them a little earlier. It's not realistic though because of all the parties involved, like Chris said.

haha i dont think there are a lot of people anymore that remember most venues 5+ years ago would barely let people book metal shows on a sunday mantinee, let alone a friday night. glad to see most venues are more accepting but there are still some places that treat it as a waste of time (who knew metal heads like to drink? $$$)

i try to make it to as many MT's as i can, if i can't stay for the whole thing, i don't. if i want to see a band that is headlining and going on at midnight, i deal with being tired the next day. isn't that what coffee or tea or Red Bull or 5 Hour Energy are for? the chance to do shit like this is getting smaller every day, the last thing i want is to worry about beauty sleep now and then turn 50 going "boy do i wish i hadn't cared so much about sleep". i can see where AndyBasty is coming from, i too am against playing really late far away, but MT is worth being snoozy the next day.

Making the shows earlier would take away from pregame time. I usually don't get drunk enough on thursdays as is.

toggletoggle post by Alexecutioner at Dec 29,2011 3:29pm
from personal band experience though, Evan and I usually hustle like crazy to get out of work, load gear, and leave Boston whenever we play Ralphs. usually arriving just as the first band is going on. it sucks showing up late for a show that you're playing but its hard with traffic and work schedules at times. i enjoy the fact that MT's start at 930 instead of 9pm which seems to be the norm at most venues. i've never once gotten to a show and wished it started earlier, im usually too busy trying to get my shit done in time to make it to the venue before missing the first band, which happens often.

LOL rusty

Andrew's opinion is indeed completely understandable and it's neither the first nor last time I'll hear it from someone. If Worcester actually had more than a very small amount of good metal bands based here, then out-out-town bands would never be expected to headline. Maybe someday. But in the meantime someone's gotta do it. Start more bands, fellow Worcesterites.

This is partially due to the stereotype that metal heads are seen as unemployed/financially poor and lack the funds needed to keep buying drinks (partially true?). So venues choose to have bands play that they think will attract a larger crowd with a fatter bankroll.
