I get liking all the bands listed as influences, but if one band was to be influenced by all of them it would sound like total shit. I never understood why people list all the bands they like as a project's influences.

Seems to me that he's saying those are his influences AS A DRUMMER and not necessarily the influences of the band he is trying to start.

I have never been in or known a band that didn't begin with a clear vision. Also, OP is trying to get a dude to join who lives 2 hrs away. I feel that you are probably the OP and clearly the novice here

Drumming wise, I don't see why you think they are so far apart. It's all extreme, fast and heavy music. It's not like he threw the dixie chicks on there or something. Judging by the influences, I could see potential for a bad ass drummer. not really looking for one now, just tossing in two cents

Why do you need a formula to start a band/project? That's the gayest thing I've ever heard. Get some like-minded musicians (term used loosely of course) and see where it goes. Better chance of coming up with something original, than "I'm starting a [insert stupid sub-genre here] band, influences include [insert like-sounding sub-genre buttdarts here].

Also, I rarely or never "jam" I bring riffs to the table that get structured once the other guys tweak and help arrange them. Neverending mindless jamming like a bunch of hippy faggots is almost as gay as limiting yourself to a dumb sub-genre.

This, this, this. Even if it's just one fucking riff, you'll get way farther than if you just jam around aimlessly. Occasionally I'll do that and a gem will pop up, but more often than not it's a monumental waste of time.
