Tom Gabel, Transgender: Against Me! Singer Becoming a Woman
"Against Me! singer, guitarist and songwriter Tom Gabel revealed that she is transgender and will soon undergo the transition process to becoming a woman. Rolling Stone broke the news, teasing an interview in an upcoming issue, noting that the punk rocker had only told a small group of family and friends before telling the magazine.
Gabel revealed that she is experiencing gender dysphoria, a condition where a person identifies with the gender opposite of their biologic sex, and said she will soon begin taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis to transition. She will then take the name Laura Jane Grace and remain married to her wife, Heather, with whom she has a 2-year-old daughter, Evelyn.
"For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," Gabel told Rolling Stone. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."
Gabel also discussed her reasoning for coming out to the magazine. "I'm going to have embarrassing moments, and that won't be fun," the singer said. "But that's part of what talking to you is about -- is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
