Isn't legion loading in everyones gear? Warhammer is working the popcorn and soda stand,Satans hand is taking tickets and Nun Defiler is making balloon animals for the kids.
Cliff Burton's sister will be doing spoken word standup and drawing caricatures. Do you like to roller skate? Suuure you do. Everyone likes to roller skate.

i don't care about agalloch, but its a pretty big name to pull in for a first time fest like this. good for them.

i don't get the whole woods of ypres worship thing though. band fucking sucks. if they wanted to make some public ode to a recently deceased black metal musician they should've went with Trondr Nefas, who actually played in decent bands. or no one because hero-worship is dumb.
Woods of Ypres is what I call a 'one-track wonder.' Not in the sense that they are a one-hit-wonder, but because I listen to and enjoy a track and then don't need to listen to them again for a good six months.
I like some Woods, but yea, overrated band. david was a unique and great musician/guy, but after a while their sound annoys me.
even if they were an amazing band the whole thing would still seem completely goofy. from what fest organizer guy wrote on the event page it just sounds like ypres dude was nice to him once at a merch table and HE NEVER FORGOT THAT EXPERIENCE, MAN. i dunno, i got scott baio to sign an autograph for me at a car show when i was a kid and he was cool about it, but pretty sure i got over it in a few days.
I don't think it qualifies as hero worship Mark, it's just a dedication to someone that inspired him to put this fest together. It's still been less than a year since he died. The band definitely isn't for everyone, but it's honest music and that is what people appreciate, plus David was an incredibly nice person. I can't believe people joking about Mrs. Gold coming to the fest though...what the fuck man. Her son died 4 days before christmas.

so many cringeworthy aspects of this fest. facebook event thread is lulz.
"188! 12 TILL WE GET TO 200! oNCE WE ANNOUNCE THE HEADLINER I'M SURE WE'LL GET THERE. Kepp spreading the word people, we want this show to be as immense as possible. Do it for the music, do it for the scene, do it for the bands, and most important of all, Do It for David Gold. remember, this fest is dedicated to him. You do not want to miss out on this Festival!!!"

None of you are putting the show together, so who cares what you think about the lineup, or person that will be speaking. Get your panties outta a knot and eat some circus peanuts about it

i dunno man, i can see if he was a close friend or his band was actually from the area/part of the scene and his family needed money to cover memorial costs or whatever and the fest was partly about that. but it's not. it just seems like faux-sentimental bullshit and high school hero worship to me. if i were a more cynical person i'd say it almost seems like he's cashing in on the dude's name to promote his fest, but i'll leave it at faux-sentimental bullshit.

and yeah, nachzehrer's set will be dedicated to scott baio's legacy of epic awesomeness. bring your 5th period health class notebooks to the autograph tent and i will draw his likeness on the cover for you. framed by two unicorns. DO IT FOR SCOTT.

wait....do it for the scene and the bands, by charging 85 bucks for a 3 days "fest"? NE Deathfest was 2 days and wasn't half of that. and where has this Lord Viall been since the Perpetual Winter days? maybe i'm blind but i can't recall having seen him since 2006 at least. sorry to sound cynical, but something about this whole thing irks me.
I don't even really know what this fest is, but the fact that it's at the El 'n' Gee tells me something is going to go wrong.
I'm sure Agalloch will be pleased as punch with whatever moron house audio engineer gets picked to work that night. Their usual impression of Millhouse adjusting Bart's rental car radio while mixing live bands will go over great.
We got LOOSE ALLIGATORS up in there! Chomp on some STICK MEAT! Come have SEX with the IRON SHEIK! And did we mention... baaaands?! There's gonna be DONKEY CRUST! GUNT! And don't miss a very special encore performance... by MRS. POTATO DICK!
no local New England bands besides Obsidian Tongue should play this. Too many bands no to wants to sit through either because they suck or everyone's seen them a million times.
I will go to see Evoken, Agalloch and some of the Canadian bands though for sure.
I wish I could go to this actually. It'd be awesome to see some of the Canadian bands and some of the Connecticut bands who don't come up here often (if ever).
That said, I must echo some of my metal colleagues concerns and criticisms of this fest. There are too many weirdnesses about it.
Everyone trashing this fest is an asshole. Who gives a fuck where the money is coming from and you must be a pretty immature little shit to talk poke fun at a mother that lost her son.

The money is a valid point for a few reasons:
a.) bands ask for a lot of money, especially ones from other parts of the country or world.
b.) If they do not make the money they were offered, the shit will hit the fan
c.) It's a first time fest and is quite a venture in itself. It's not easy to do shit like this. it requires funds, patience, and organizational and people skills.
I am happy that this fest is happening. Yea, I'm not a fan of every band playing, but that doesn't matter. I think it's cool that someone is taking initiative to set up the fest, albeit the method of it being promoted is quite goofy. I've known (acquainted myseld with is more like it) Lord Viall since my band played with Perpetual Winter in March 2005. He had been running Haunted Gates for a while before that, and had been setting a few shows up in his spare time. Obviously I hadn't seen or heard much from him in the past 5 years, but more power to him.
I could easily critique his promotional method and other things, but none of it matters as the fest seems to be happening.
Judging by the facebook attendee list, it looks like a bunch of younger metal kids and overnighters will be there. It's not a fest that will drag the old school metal people out of the woodwork. The bands that are playing have a draw amongst younger crowds. It will be an interesting few days to say the least, and has the potentional to piss a lot of people (bands off), or make a bunch of people happy.
As far as the David Gold thing goes, I know a lot of people were cool with him. The fest is indeed dedicated to him, but the way it is announced as such makes it seem as a promotional tool.
post by DuckPenis at Jul 18,2012 7:51am
This festival needs more Goatwhore and Blackguard.
They would be better off with Goatwhore with the size of a crowd they are trying to draw. I don't know that Evoken or Agalloch are gonna draw more than 150 tops.
I had my tickets as soon as I found out Blackie Lawless' aunt was doing a beatbox duet with Michael Winslow. I didn't even know bands were playing until now.
i feel bad in advance for obsidian tongue. the will probably be the only good band that ends up playing and wont get paid shit. hope i'm wrong though.

Ugh, just read the FB wall.. padawans.
Also, Lord Viall reads this forum I'm sure. He used to post. Not sure why there's no official posts about this fest here unless he saw the "THE WINTER IS COMING FEST LOOKS GAY" thread

I actually don't get all the hate for this 'fest.' I don't know anything about the background or the people putting it on though, but to me it just looks like a bunch of random black metal bands playing together, not that weird of a thing.

eh, there's plenty to poke fun at about how this fest came together and some of the details around it, and i guess its a wait and see over whether some of the bigger names drop or not, but all in all i'd say this thing definitely shaped up better than i originally expected. at least the line-up anyways. we'll see how things run on the ground in october.

Not my fest, not my problem bro, haha.
seriously, I don't give a shit about the politics. I'll get to see a lot of
awesome bands that I've never seen before AND a lot of cool folks will
be be there. I'm pretty sure its these guys first fest and you cant expect
it to run like clockwork the way MDF does. So go, get drunk and let the
guy booking the fucking thing worry about the details...

Yes and thats why most metal heads and their bands accomplish nothing in life. myself included for the most part.. This fest is shaping up to be o k, although its a bit pricey for the bands offered. I will check out 1 day.
Does anyone know if Sig:Ar:Tyr are playing any other New England shows besides this? I really don't want to spend 30 bucks or whatever, plus the gas money, just for one band.
post by Dave Emerson at Jul 20,2012 11:59am
Sig:Ar:Tyr are not playing any other NE shows or, as far as I know, any other shows period (for a while). Daemonskald's live lineup was constructed specifically so he could play this fest. Fen, Wolven Ancestry, Empyrean Plague are all likewise not playing any other US shows in this timeframe.
And just so the curious are aware, the answer to "Where did all the money come from?" is: from my pocket. I'm bankrolling all the headliners and everything else for this fest, because I believe that New England needs something like this. The ticket prices are in order to pay EVERY band what they deserve (because we don't believe in stiffing bands), and so we can do this again next year.

Oh, and maybe the method of promotion is a little amateur-ish, but this is our first time doing this. Everyone's got to start somewhere, and despite our inexperience, I think we're having a great deal of success so far.

"I can't believe RTTP clowns are still complaining and putting down this fest."
Gonna throw my two cents in - Nick and Dave are two VERY stand-up guys who I've known for a WHILE. Not overnighters by any means. As a dude who's been slogging it out in the fucking BARREN WASTELAND that is CT for far too long (that's why I listen to Duran Duran and think YOU'RE the buttdarts), I give these dudes a LOT of credit for pulling together something like this for a state that legit DOES NOT DESERVE IT. CT has been getting better and better but its metal "scene" has been a sad fraction of what I've experienced in Boston and Worcester. So for them to say "fuck it" and do it here... HUGE BALLS. They've pulled together a pretty commendable fest for a first time out. Sure, I'd have chosen some different bands, but fuck it - it's not my show. Tom "Ghoulash" hit the nail on the fucking head. Dunno about the "Legion" aspect. Strikes me as a little NYDM for the under-40 black metal set but if the idea of "new" people who will support your shit and ultimately put gas in your fucking tank are a bad thing...
BURN IT AND THEN PISS
I'll see you buttdarts there.
Hails Nick and Dave.
I don't think anyone here isn't commending them for putting on the fest. It's a great idea. SIG:AR:TYR? I mean, come on. The lineup has some gems.
The promotion was lol worth, but I think facebook is dumb. I don't wish any ill will on the fest at all, and props to Dave for funding it. I'm hoping it works out.
YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE ' LEGION ASPECT'?! ............THEN LOAD IN YOUR OWN GODDAMN GEAR YOU PUSSY!!!!!!! (mumbling)sunnnnnuvabitch......
This made me lol. There is nothing worse than grown men who give themselves nicknames. It reminds of that episode of Seinfeld were George wants everyone to call him T-Bone.

Orcy Adams broadcasting live from Game On at Fenway Park, taking calls on Winter is Coming fest. Orcy care not for fest, too many overnight norsecore fags. Orcy think Fen inane folk metal, all folk metal fat nerds with flutes. David Gold's mother? I banged her.
Probably going down to see Evoken and maybe Agalloch if I decide to stay another night. Evoken were crushing at Martyrdoom Festival...can't wait to see them again.

Turn out was probably less than half full yesterday. I'm sure there will be much more people today though. Evoken was great last night. Definitely worth going yesterday.

It was pretty good. They opened with Limbs, closed with our fortress is burning. Dead winter days was in there. I don't remember hearing anything from the mantle.
Cheap beer. $2 burgers. $1 hot dogs. Hats off to the legion. I was definitely a skeptic when the show was first announced. Nicely done.
Was there for the first 2 days, Evoken, Obsidian Tongue, Fen and Agalloch all had great sets. The sound was by far the best i've heard for Agalloch out of the 3-4 times i've seen them. Was skeptical of this fest but it turned out awesome.
