i use a Maxon 880 tube overdrive into a Sunn Beta Lead. i don't really need an overdrive pedal but i use it more as a channel switcher so can have a crunch sound from my head and then the pedal gives me a nice clean boost.
as far as an amp, it really depends on what style you're playing. different amps are good at different things. keep in mind, tube amps sound their best LOUD-- when the tubes are being driven hard-- so it's hard to test out a tube amp in a guitar center or what have you.
if you're not going to be in a super loud band (indie rock or something) you probably don't need more than 50 watts. if you're going to be in a balls to the wall high-gain thing, you'll probably want 100 or more. also, tube watts are "louder" than solid state. i find that a 100 watt tube amp and a 300 watt solid state seem to be about the same.
