Funny; I just started messing around with this kinda stuff on bass myself, recently. (Nowhere near this calibre, obviously.) I just threw it out there one day, not knowing what I was doing and with the setup I was using (hot pickups; I barely touch my strings most of the time) it just worked. I could never manage to make the tapping thing happen before that, and then I figured out what I was doing, and why it worked:

I was typing on my fretboard. CMOPUTER NERD, LOL

Seriously, once I wrapped my brain around that, I was off and running. Don't get me wrong, I still suck at it, but I'm at least able to conceive of something on the fly and make it sorta happen on the fretboard, now. 'S cool, although figuring out where it actually fits in a band context is a whole new game.
