It's a valid point, but it's more or less a reflection of how this country is now. Dogs are overbred (as are cats) and exotic pets are released in the wild because people can't tale care of them (Burmese python taking over the Everglades).
It is fucked up, yes, but it has nothing to do with the pet itself or the owner. If someone can afford a pet then they have every right to do so. But at the same time, this country is socially and economically corrupt- that's where the problem is.
At least most dogs have homes here.. Other countries are infected with stray cats and dogs.
Expressing our right to own and take care of an animal does not directly correlate with someone not being able to afford food themselves. Our government just needs to stop sending 3/4 of this country's money into the military industrial complex, and invest it in social programs and education.
