Ridley himself has said that he didn't think EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of the movie through as much as everyone seems to think, and the things he did are not necessarily supposed to be open to all kinds of interpretations, some things were just there because that's the way they fit into the movie, and not everything that happens has to do with the Alien franchise.
