i'm not into mall metal or trendy metal as Killswitch is lumped into but I just downloaded their song Holy Diver and I actually really like it. Anyone else hear it? not a fan of their original music as its pretty stale and trendy but they did good with the DIO cover.

toggletoggle post by Kinslayer at Jun 2,2006 11:39am

Killswitch Engay covering Dio?

That's fucking blasphemy!

toggletoggle post by toolazytologin at Jun 2,2006 12:26pm
it is and killswitch is blasphemy to metal today but i have to say that one song came out good. as hard as it is to say the guy singing does a really cool job.

The clip sounds pretty good actually.

toggletoggle post by sacreligion at Jun 2,2006 12:43pm
that was pretty good...i like killswitch though so maybe i'm biased

toggletoggle post by i_am_not_me   at Jun 2,2006 12:44pm
Howard's clean vocals are awesome. Solo sounds decent. But the rest of it is an abomination, as expected.

toggletoggle post by toolazytologin at Jun 2,2006 2:44pm
i am not a fan of Killswitch Isgay but i do have to give them credit on this cover. they did good. and a simplistic guitar solo to boot!? those guys can't solo to save their lives.

I think they play under their ability on purpose though, part of the many things that bothers me about them. I know that the dude with the jewish fro went to Berklee as a guitar performance major, so I'm sure somewhere along the way he learned to solo.

Oh well, I just made myself into more of a piece of shit by knowing background of Killswitch Engage.

My complaint with this cover is that the guitar tone is not right for the song.

i heard the drummer is some god at the drums but all i hear is ac/dc style drumming. i guess his prior bands showcase his talent but i haven't herd of them.

the guy went to a music school!? if they have the ability then they should at least show some of the talent, i mean they don't gotta go crazy show off playin. i read the guitarist of killswich isgay (sorry i like that name) teaches at $50 per hour

pfft 50 is not a lot for an hour lesson... anybody good could be making that much. If I were the guitarist for Killswitch, I'd charge retarded metalcore kids 250 an hour or more.

toggletoggle post by toolazytologin at Jun 2,2006 3:35pm
i'm sorry $50 per 1/2 HOUR

toggletoggle post by toolazytologin at Jun 2,2006 3:37pm
there are a lot of metalcore kids, just walk into any mall and they crowd around Hot Topic. When I saw Overcast shirts in the Hot Topic window i just shook me head in shame.

toggletoggle post by sacreligion at Jun 2,2006 3:43pm
why? wasn't overcast like the first metalcore band? wouldn't it make sense a place dealing in metalcore would have their shirts? plus you got members of killswitch and shadows fall in the band

$$$$$

If you ignore about a decade of metal/core crossover bands before them.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 2,2006 4:10pm
the accused was the first labeled "metal-core" bands.

toggletoggle post by sacreligion at Jun 2,2006 4:19pm
yeah there were a lot of crossover bands but not what you would call "metalcore"

i never really got into the accused...i dunno why i just never really like em

toggletoggle post by toolazytologin at Jun 2,2006 4:40pm
the link to download the song is above.

ok, just downloaded some BHBS. Its decent. Kinda a rip off of Mesuggah if you ask me. Some crazy time sigs. Drums are pretty intense and complex. Also downloaded Red Tide and that stuff is pretty out there. The jazz stuff is really complex so ok this guy knows his drumming. I eat my words. Why dont he play like this in killgay?

metalcore = mallcore. the majority of fans are like 12-18.

I thought you meant Accuser the oldschool german thrash band. accused never heard of them either.

toggletoggle post by TheGreatSpaldino   at Jun 2,2006 5:37pm
the last thing the world needs is to be able to mosh to Holy Diver.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Jun 2,2006 9:43pm
the song is good but i too hate killswitch encrap. blood has been shed and red tide were great bands but killswitch is getting to be commercial and sucky

As the Rev said, the term did exist, and bands were called 'metal-core' even in the 80s (in addition to 'crossover'). The term is now bastardized to refer to a certain set of bands, and it's now a 'dirty word'. Some of my old bands were called 'metalcore' and we formed before Overcast did.

So we're just saying, the term existed for quite some time now, and if you hear some Revisionist Metal Historian tell you otherwise, slug him/her twice, once for you and once for me.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Jun 2,2006 9:56pm
killswitch is not metalcore nor is unearth or shadows fall or all that remains! do you guys think they are? i like that term mall metal because it is true. big biz has turned this style of metal into a trend and target young kids and just walk into any mall, i see so many little kids wearing those shirts and acting like fools. but then again they are just kids.

toggletoggle post by Kevord  at Jun 2,2006 10:31pm
Unearth is the definition of Metalcore.

Genre names change meaning over time. Hell, Metallica called 'emselves power metal in their early days.

toggletoggle post by metalguy at Jun 3,2006 12:41am
If you listen to all of Killswitch Engage's music.. You will notice things that are kind of difficult.. not impossible to pull off musically. Seriously... But you have to listen.. It is all subltle shit here and there.
One of the biggest parts of playing good music with good song structure is to hold back from masterbating the neck for the whole song. And as you can tell it is alot easier to do just that than hold back.

Doesn't matter if the meaning changes over time, I even said as much in the last post (the bit about the bastardization of the term). Overcast is not the first metalcore band if there were bands earlier called metalcore. It's that simple.
