its too bad that bands once defined as hardcore, which was then bastradised into "core", are ones i looked up too, such as those from the ealy 80s DC scene. Im willing to bet that any memmber of those bands would look at "hardcore" today and just shake thier head. It doesnt stand for anything anymore, nothing more than shitty slogans and mind control for those with the biggest crew.

I for one 100% agree with Colin.

I grew up playing shows with Slapshot, Above and Beyond, Final Say, SBC, and and other great boston bands. I was at every sunday matinee at the channel I could to see Sheer Terror, DYS, Excel, Judge, Gorrilla Biscuits, Murphy's Law, The Bruisers, etc...

As a musician, I also grew up loving metal. From singing in Pillory, to writing power-metal stuff, I'm very much a metal "dungeons and dragons" geek. Hell, I even play world of warcraft.


Hardcore IS real. If you grew up with this shit, it's huge. It's not just what happens on stage, it takes place throughout your whole life. It's how you dress, what you stand for, and the way you live your life. From it's very roots, Hardcore has been a movement.

Metal is ART. It takes place somewhere in the deepest depths in the back of our minds. The music is in and of itself a journey. Standing alone it has it's own merit, and can be an experience.

These are two different worlds. Metal kids just don't belong at hardcore shows, and hardcore kids will never EVER get metal shows. Theres the occasional oddball like myself that's managed to grow up understanding both, but even I can find it baffling how completely different the two are.

The saddest part is all the fake hardcore/metal hybrid or crossover bands out there right now that just label themselves Hardcore. Most of these bands have no roots to hardcore at all, and have more in common with the fucking DEFTONES than punk rock.

i dont get what the big deal is. seems like a total waste of energy to me. just like what you want to like, who cares if someone else likes it. i like lots of bands that i have been told time and time again suck, are "fake", posers, wannabes, all that ridiculous shit. but i listen to it because i like it. who cares who grew up listening to what, or who stands for what. as long as you have the balls to stand up for what you believe in, regardless of the flack you catch from it, then who really gives a flying fuck.
