Has this ever been given any consideration?

Just a simple link on the forum that opens a chat in a small window or something like on the esp message board.

Anyone think it would be a good idea?

I think it is a cool idea, However it would be just another outlet for anon posters to run their traps.

It would make sense to have it so you wouldn't be able to eneter the chat unless you're signed in.

IRC chat is a good idea, but it would probably be a good idea to have a Java client on the site too.

I've sort of worked on something like that. I was using AJAX to update a panel, but I never finished it

I've played around with chat room code before, it's a neat idea, but an RTTP IRC channel would be awsome...

however, I don't know if aaron would want to host the IRC channel himself or if it would be more bandwidth friendly to use another IRC network.

I agree with GM about not being able to enter the chat unless you were logged in.

im not into this idea... enough stupid shit gets said when people have this much time to think about it. also information would get lost since threads would become chats instead. and more time would get wasted hehe.

Also, anonymous people on IRC aren't that much of a problem in my opinion. Or at least I don't see it being a problem with RTTP. Plus channel operators can just kick them the fuck out.
