this is quite an album. i don't really know what to think, i'll have to listen to it 20 times before really grasping everything, but right off the bat its awesome. its experimental even for Opeth. the song writing is spectacular, definitely way more in depth than Ghost Reveries. it follows a similar pattern though, there is much more singing than growling, which is really my only complaint. he does a fair amount of death growls, but its almost like he switched around his singing, where he used to only use the clean singing as secondary vocals. this time its the death thats secondary. there is a great Swedish death metal feel to some of it, you can hear a huge difference since the addition of Martin Axenrot and Fredrik Akesson, such as the blast beats. its a lot to take in, don't expect to worship it right away, but it will definitely grow on you. overall i will give this a 9 out of 10, i can't say anything bad except that it needs more death growls.

i feel the same way about it as i did with Type O Negative's Dead Again. it was so much to take in all at once, but now i love that album. i'm sure the same thing will happen.

oh and Tom if you read this, we'll be hanging out at my apartment later and listening to this if you'd like to join.

It's grown on me a little, but I'll make a proper judgement when I buy the actual album today. I wish the rest of Watershed sounded like Heir Apparent.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jun 3,2008 3:27pm
yeah i don't think it was a good idea to put that song as the first actual full song, it definitely doesn't set the mood for the rest of the album. they should have put that like fifth or so.

toggletoggle post by mikeofdecrepitude at Jun 3,2008 3:33pm
The songwriting seems a lot different to me. I'm still not sure how I feel about "Burden", but the acoustic disharmony, and laughter towards the end is quite sinister. The end of "The Lotus Eater" achieves a similar effect as well. I wish they did more creepy stuff like that.

thats absolute bullshit.... probably either be on a single or a re-release. FUCK FUCK FUCK

toggletoggle post by mikeofdecrepitude at Jun 3,2008 6:36pm
The lack of AiC cover made the purchase of the special edition completely pointless.

Best $40 I ever spent.

Including the $40 Josh's Mom charges for head.

toggletoggle post by Aegathis  at Jun 3,2008 11:10pm
we were listening to it during the the drive back from Belgrade to Austria, i thought it sounded pretty fucking awesome especially considering its been a while since theyve impressed me.

toggletoggle post by Neverpurified nli at Jun 3,2008 11:12pm
i thought they couldnt include the AiC cover just yet because of legal bullshit

anywho.....fantastic. the new members are amazing. that drum in fill at about 2:10 in Porcelain Heart, while the rest of the band is rocking out to that slow doom riff.....fucking awesome

toggletoggle post by Neverpurified nli at Jun 3,2008 11:13pm
BTW, Dwyer...where did you pick up the vinyl copy? did you pre-order that shit? or are some stores carrying it?

toggletoggle post by Conservationist  at Jun 3,2008 11:47pm
that band will turn you gay fast

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Jun 4,2008 12:24am
The End Records had all that for $40!

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jun 4,2008 10:42am
after 3 more listens last night, this album kicks major amounts of ass. Hex Omega is a killer fucking song. the leap from Ghost Reveries to this is monstrous.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jun 4,2008 10:43am
oh yeah, and Tom, i don't know if you tried to call me, but i should have stated that my phone is broken.

toggletoggle post by MikeofDecrepitude at Jun 4,2008 10:58am
This album hasn't left my CD player upon purchasing.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jun 4,2008 11:01am
my friend got that package. the vinyl looks pretty cool, but I don't know about that poster with the dude's head. Kind of lame.

Can barely see the autographs too because they used a black marker and signed a black paper.

s'all good. and so far i'm having trouble wrapping my brain around this album. alot of it seems almost forced and i'm not quite sure if Fredricks guitar playing complementary to the overall sound. i'll leave it in the car cd player for a couple weeks to try to understand it more. so far though, i am more excited about Ihsahn's AngL - that i am sure is an absolute masterpiece.

I loved every album until Ghost Reveries. I didn't enjoy that record at all. I've yet to actually purchase Watershed, but we got a promo for it a few weeks ago at work and I've been spinning it non stop. Fucking awesome album. Leaps and bounds ahead of Ghost Reveries.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jun 4,2008 2:30pm
AngL a masterpiece?
I don't know, it's going to have to grow on me then. I mean it's great stuff but would you classify it in best of '08?

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jun 4,2008 3:14pm
AngL is fucking awesome, but it does have its flaws. they are few and far between though.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jun 4,2008 3:17pm
does anyone appreciate Lykathea Aflame?
They supposedly have a new album coming out under the name "Lykathe" or something.. can't wait for it.
Was never too fond of the band's themes though..

i do really like Ghost Reveries, but its unfocused to me. its up and down, Beneath the Mire sounds like it was thrown together, but The Baying of the Hounds is one of my favorite songs they have written. that song Hours of Wealth is the worst clean one they ever wrote however.

toggletoggle post by LongDeadGod  at Jun 4,2008 4:07pm
fav track for me so far is heir apparent.
