I'm getting shooting pains going from my lower back below my hip and to my knee. I can't walk around... and I can't sit still. wtf!

toggletoggle post by BSV at Jun 29,2009 10:38pm
I played the other night with Abnormality and after taking 8 months off from not playing bass live (longest break ever for me) and now I have the worst bangover. All down my back to my ass around my neck and chest.
Rev, I'll get you high if you want.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 29,2009 10:42pm
no, I have my radio show for one thing. I wish I had some killer pain meds at home. I think all I have there is advil.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 29,2009 10:57pm
I really feel like I'm going to black out from it.

toggletoggle post by MikeOvDecrepitvde at Jun 29,2009 11:02pm
Sciatica maybe? This man needs opiates.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 29,2009 11:39pm
I'm not sure if I'm going to puke, black out, or run in circles.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 12:21am
that's what i've been outta work with for two weeks now. If you see a doc they'll give you good stuff for it.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 12:22am
does the same area get numb sometimes? Does it hurt more to sit or stand?

toggletoggle post by Pires at Jun 30,2009 12:27am
I had that rev. It was treated with 3 months outta work and physical therapy. Plus it happened at work so I was comped. Haven't been the same since.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 12:30am
mine happened at work too.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 12:34am
can sit, can't stand, can't lay, can't sit still. my leg is starting to go numb.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 12:35am
and my ass is starting to go numb.

toggletoggle post by boblovesmusic   at Jun 30,2009 12:41am

toggletoggle post by Pires at Jun 30,2009 12:51am
rev, that is exactly what happened to me. Good luck. Jimbo, just pray you can still drum comfortably. I occasionaly still get the sharp pain but nowhere near as frequent or severe, and usually I just tough it out.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 12:58am
the thing is that I didn't do anything...

toggletoggle post by Pires at Jun 30,2009 1:04am

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 1:05am

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 1:09am
I need john redcorn.

toggletoggle post by boblovesmusic   at Jun 30,2009 1:09am
wow, you sound over the radio like you're in pain. Jeez.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 1:29am
Sounds like you are definitely suffering from Sciatica. A couple different things can cause that, most of which can be seen on an MRI. Here's a stretch to try, this is pretty much the only way i was comfortable for the first week.
*written for left sciatic pain, reverse for right side.*
You lie flat on your back. try and put your left knee over your right, with the inside of your left knee flat on the ground (or as close as you can get) on the right side of your right knee. This will stretch the nerve, and relieve a LOT of discomfort. It also helps to ice for ten minutes, wait ten minutes, heat for ten minutes, rest for ten, and repeat. (all on the lower left side of the back, of course switch sides if it's the other side that's having the problem.)

Your Mac raped you.

Take two advil, drink some prune juice and you'll be fine.

trying to sooth it in the shower was a painful disaster and now im soaking wet and can't dry myself. I called my dr, but the answering machine said "f u call I the am". I tried you stretching and thought "wow, amazing" but the second I stopped... twice as bad. worst thing is I have a terrible cough. oi vey. I took 1000mg of tylennol. lets see.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 3:17am
im also starting to have jacob ladder like hallucinations from the pain and my right hand is ingling. fuck.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 3:43am
fell asleep for 10 minutes, woke up and it's worse. like an ass charlie horse. wtf!

toggletoggle post by quintessence  at Jun 30,2009 4:02am
Damn dude. I hope you can see a dr soon and get the help you need. Sucks. : /

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 5:28am
I just kept stretching until I fell a sleep for a bit.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 5:40am
i'm in the exact same position. I wake up every two hours or so because of the pain. The way i sleep is I go slightly on my right side (I have sciatica in my left leg), then do that stretch, but put a pillow under the right knee . It's a little less extreme of a stretch so it's easier so sleep that way. Have you tried the cold/hot yet? That really helps.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 5:43am
I doubt you would want to, but if you wanna drive to boston i'll give you some muscle relaxants so you can make it to your docs without being so miserable.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 5:53am
I can't really manuver to get anything hot/cold. im also dreading sitting in my car long enough to get to the drs. plus, I drive a srick.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 6:22am
talled to an on call nurse. navigating all those menus at the drs and talking with someone made me forget the pain for a few minutes. she suggested a bag of peas from the freezer. I was also able to get myself a popsicle.

toggletoggle post by SkinSandwich at Jun 30,2009 7:36am
I have had 2 back surgeries. Don't let it go. Go to the doc. I know it will suck to drive there, but it is better than the alternative. They will give you good pain meds and you will be able to relax and sleep. have Carina drive you. Is she around?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 7:43am
she dropped the dogs of and gave me advil. I just don't understand cause I didn't do anything more than cough. the other time I did something similar was from lifting. I stopped using that machine.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 7:44am
i don't know if there's anyone that can go to the store for you, but "careone" makes a Hot & Cold Compress that comes with an elastic wrap so you don't need to hold it in place. You should get two, because you need one to stay at room temp, because if you try and microwave a frozen one it can fuck up the compress. They have gel in em, and because of the wrap they come with they're ideal for parts of your back that aren't easy to reach. The cold helps with the pain a lot, but if you want what feels like an "ass charlie horse" to go away, you need the hot. The hot compress is the only thing that will stop your muscle from spasming. They're around 8bucks at stop and shop or cvs.

You can roll over in bed sleeping and fuck your back up. It is weird. Seriously though see a doctor. I made the mistake of putting it off and I was fucked. At least you will feel better with good pain meds and you can rule out any major problems.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 7:54am
Sciatica can be caused by a couple things rev, and not all of them are related to heavy lifting. My doc says i tore my piriformis. Which is the muscle running from the base of your spine through your ass. Check this out:
http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cyberthe...rapist/back/buttocks/piriformis.htm
and each way you can get it has slightly different stretches that are good for it, the one i told you before is the only one i know that you're supposed to use for all sciatica pain.
Here's a listing and explanation of the things that can cause it:
http://www.spine-health.com/wellness/exercise/overview-sciatica-exercises

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 7:56am
I have cvs across the street. too bad the drs is a 20+ minute drive.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 7:56am
If you can get a ride, and don't wanna wait till you can get a docs appointment, there is a walk in clinic at Mass General hospital that opens at 8am. They're relatively cheap, and will definitely take care of you.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 7:57am
they sell pillows at CVS for driving/sitting in a car with sciatica. They don't totally stop the pain, but they make it MUCH easier to drive by taking the pressure of the sciatic nerve when you sit.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 8:01am
You could have easily done it taking pics, all the shots you take while stretching around people could do it. And like SS said you can do it just from rolling over wrong. I did it from stepping off a curb the wrong way.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 8:03am
I think you forget that I live in NH. the nurse told me to drive with a pillow in my back will see if that works. worse than coughing is sneezing. I just sneezed and followed it up with a "mother fucker"

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 30,2009 8:07am
i didn't forget, i just thought maybe someone could drive you and you could stretch out in the passenger seat. (reclined) But if you can get to the docs this morning near where you are, by all means.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 8:10am
the only person who could do that is carina and shes at work. I will suck it up and drive after they open.

toggletoggle post by Conservationist  at Jun 30,2009 9:48am
Is there possibility of a calcium or potassium deficiency?

Try a banana? NO NOT A MANBANANA

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 11:15am
the drs gave me a great idea, wet towel in the microwave. only problem is I laid on the floor with the remote and it's not working and the tv is on fucking tyra. wtf!

toggletoggle post by Pires at Jun 30,2009 11:34am

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jun 30,2009 11:48am
back pain is the worst thing.
every now and then I get really bad pain in my back due to me falling off a roof when I worked in construction. sucks.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 12:03pm
so they are over booked at my drs. I have 2 options, 10:45 appt tomorrow or go to the emergency room.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Jun 30,2009 12:19pm
i've been in a conference room all day...

anyhow..you have the good insurance. listen to me and call blue cross and they will list out the closest clinic that you can go to.

toggletoggle post by BSV at Jun 30,2009 1:09pm
Try the stretch that Jim described.
I had terrible sciatica after sitting bitch in a Impala for 30 hours straight from Montreal to Winnipeg. Played a show, then slept on a terrible couch and couldn't even walk without a shooting pain all up and down my back and legs-headbanging was fucking painful, I couldn't do it-I was sooooo fucking miserable.
But I learned that stretch and it worked wonders. I do it all the time now.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 1:47pm
fuck it. I called everyone and got shit. going to the er now.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 30,2009 2:55pm

funny, I just bought a gorefest 2x12" and relapse sent an empty gorefest sleeve (older album)

anyhow, the dr just looked at the xray and it's a pinched nerve. im getting motrin, a muscle relaxer and a painkiller.

Ouch rev, them's suck. I'm glad you went to the ER, sciatic pain is no joke, no one should have to suffer through that without some assistance.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jul 1,2009 12:14am
Did they do an MRI? Or did they base the pinched nerve on not seeing anything in the xray? If they didn't do an MRI you should follow up with your PCP to get one so you can be sure that's actually it and there's nothing else wrong with you. It's really hard to be sure about a pinched nerve, and you could have tissue damage you don't know about.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 1,2009 12:26am
im going to rest for a couple days and if I don't feel better, im going to go to some back specialist

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 1,2009 2:31am
i have anthem. it seems that the flexeril works for only 4 hrs and viccodins for about 2. too bad they are 8 and 4 hrs apart for the prescription.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jul 1,2009 3:08am
skelaxin works better than flexeril, you should ask your PCP about it.. and they should have you on a time release vics, if not some stronger opiate. They always start you with the weakest of things, mostly due to the general suspicion in in the health care industry of people in pain. You can talk to your doc about it, and tell em that it's honestly not enough. If after that they don't give you something stronger, than you need a new doc. What your dealing with is incredibly painful, and the only reason for giving you such weak meds is distrust. It's bullshit, if you were a middle aged man you would have been given OCs.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 1,2009 9:58am

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 1,2009 4:08pm
I can sleep any where on anything. right now, I especially can't sit. this sucks. my whole life revolves around sitting.

Also, my dogs seem to know that I'm not 100% cause they are acting like assholes.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jul 1,2009 4:25pm
yep, sitting's impossible. I hate to sound like a broken record, but you need to ask your PCP for some stronger meds - specifically for sleeping. I know that for at least the first couple days your supposed to immobilize yourself, and there are certain muscle relaxants (soma, skelaxin) that are adjuncts to bed rest that they can give you. They'll give you valium (or an equivalent benzo) if you ask for it, and that will definitely help you sleep.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 1,2009 7:06pm

glad to hear your feeling better.. I bet you could get your doc to write a note saying that you pinched a nerve from sitting all day at work, then at least you'd get paid... and it's probably not THAT far from the truth.

Yea sounds like sciatica, ive been getting it really bad off and on for the past few years, on top of this tendinitis that Ive got going on in my upper body. Im pretty sure it came from all those long ass drives back and fourth to Zircon practice.
I was told I would have to do physical therapy for it, in the mean time ive been getting massages done by a pro, and have been doing various stretching. However it doesnt always do the trick. I believe the number one cause is a pinched nerve in the spine from bad posture.

toggletoggle post by Aegathis  at Jul 3,2009 2:33pm
when Im driving it helps when i recline my seat as far back as I can , as to not put so much pressure on the affected area.

i can totally relate...I got rear ended by a drunk driver
years ago and he gave me a spinal injury that required a partial
discectomy. I still deal with frequent pain issues and other than
being offered a disc trim and painkillers...i basically just have to
live with it and it is fucking BRUTAL. I have oxycodone, valium,
Ibuprofin 800s,soma,and vikes and even all of that shit doesn't
work on a bad day especially with the sciatica problems....i'd go
to a muthafuckin witchdoctor if it would fix this.
