Gibson-wise, I can't stand Les Pauls (Blasphemy, I know, but the upper fret access SUCKS)

Ibanez's that are actually made in Japan, not in Korea, are okay. The basses > the guitars.

Ibanez gets a lot of shit because, let's face it, they produce a ton of low end poop.But their higher end models aren't that bad - I still have my old rg neck-thru - its not the best, but not a bad guitar. Granted, I still like my esp better.

Ibanez is what it is. my first guitar was an Ibanez, a good beginner's guitar. Some of the higher models are decent, but they aren't the best. I don't think that's their target audience.

On the Ibanez note, I fucking LOVE my RG7620.

I used to have a few Ibanez and all of em had shitty jacks. Bad wiring. Bad vuggum.

Say what you will about the playability of the upper frets on a Les Paul, but as far the tone goes they are VERY hard to beat. Same goes for pretty much all Gibson guitars I would say. Gibson basses on the other hand are pretty blah. They all have about the same sound (which is kind of muddy) and really bad neck dive.

Ibanez: They high end stuff is good, but for how much you pay thyere is still better stuff out there. As brian dc said the basses are better than the guitars but I would still rather spend my money elsewhere.

I love my Ibanez bass (SR506), but it could definitely be better. I'd rather play a six string version of my ESP any day. That's why I haven't used my ibanez at any shows yet.

Gibson makes terrible basses. The sound is arguably bland and just boring. Same thing with Epiphone.

When it comes to basses. the Warwick double $$ is by far the nicest, best sounding bass I've ever played. Only complaint is how heavy it is.

gibbys: get a 70's custom with a maple cap and you're straight. not a huge fan of non-maple caps. But yeah, these guitars have tons of weight = big tone

ibbys: not a fan of the hockey-stick headstock and their trems. but they had a double-ball trem that was pretty cool, though it required special strings or hacking them yourself. Personally I was always a Jackson fan, I don't think there's a huge difference though, it's like SD vs. Dimarzio or Springfield vs. Shelbyville.

other thing about gibbys is they used to use the most ridiculously heavy-duty hardware. I scored a 78 custom LP for an old guitar player of mine for $1600 on ebay, first thing I did to it was rip it apart in front of him (at his request) and install EMGs (shudder...)

Leaded solder, .25" thick wiring, gigantic pots, the works. Actually I still have all the original hardware and pickups somewhere... ebay here I come! Shit was dank.

I stopped caring about guitars after I got my SG Faded Special, I love that thing.

Up til '76 was the "golden" era for gibson. After that, they shipped the plant to nashville when Norlin bought out Gibson and the product took a CONSIDERABLE cut in quality. However, at this time lefties and custom guitars were still coming out of the Kalamazoo shop. (thus why Ian's '78 Custom impressed him so much.)

The original Gibson shop in Kalamazoo is still making guitars. Same people that were originally making Gibsons, too. Only now, the company is called Heritage.

From '76 until the early 90's Gibson is reputed to have released some of the poorest quality instruments of their history. In the late 90's and early 2000's things have been making a great improvement, but after the release of the Zoot Suit guitar (made of real quality PLYWOOD), and rampant rumors that Peavey is making a legit bid to buy Gibson, I think Gibson will never be the same company their reputation was built by.

Excellent info, sir. That guitar was definitely built like a tank, I could barely even get the solder joints apart. Totally regret not keeping it for myself
