on one hand, everybody should have the right to own weapons equal to what could be used against them. it's the principle this country was built upon, and while we're no longer a frontier colony, it still applies.

on the other hand, if the gun market was unrestricted, they would be as common as any other weapon, and crazy fuckers who would claim it's their god given right would go out and murder (in the name of god). that's why background checks and waiting periods are there.

Factor in unemployment, gangs, high birth rates, and poor education systems and you have an entire society full of people that need to take care of their own, just like you're saying.
