I've been fat for a very long time. For years, I've tried on and off losing weight and exercising. I've definitely felt the best when exercising regularly to semi-regularly but there was always something missing. I was eating 3 meals a day like most of you do and feeling lethargic most of the day. I'd get to the gym already tired. Not good.

Then, almost a month ago now, a friend, who is getting into diet and nutritional theory on the side, turned me on to the Warrior Diet. The Warrior Diet is a diet using cycles, and correct eating habits.

For ~20 hours a day, I practice controlled fasting, called the "undereating phase" of the warrior diet. I will eat little to no food, though if I am hungry I'll eat something raw: walnuts, a clementine, etc. It has to be under 400 kcals (Calories) of raw, unprocessed and, if possible, organic food. I will drink a LOT of water, tea, and coffee though. No sugar or cream.

Then comes the most important part, the "overeating phase." In these last 4 hours of the day, I eat until I'm not hungry anymore. For this part of the day, you can literally eat anything you want as long as it's not over-processed or synthetic food... which is something you should be avoiding like the plague anyway. For my diet, I'm generally trying to keep a high fat, low carb diet to put my body in a controlled state of ketosis in which the body using its fat reserves (ingested fat and body fat) to burn off the most fat. Every other day or every two days, I will throw some more carbs in there because the results of long periods of ketosis is unknown and I'm not really willing to take the risk.

This is my fourth week of doing the diet. I haven't gone to the gym (the Warrior diet is slightly modified for active people) or worked out since starting it and, so far, I've lost 15 pounds. I feel better than ever. Alert and awake during the day and satisfied at night after the large meal.

The way the diet works is that it puts your body into a sort of survival mode during the day, an instinctual response to low caloric intake that has been suppressed by eating multiple times during the day, which burns fat for fuel, detoxifies your system, and boosts your immune system. At night, the relaxation instinct takes hold and you just feel good. Eventually, the high of eating is supposed to be comparable to sex and working out.

A lot of people may call this a fad diet, or dangerous, but they simply haven't done the research or looked to humans' historical lifestyles. The Warrior Diet is literally simulating our days as hunter-gatherers. You will feel more primal, focused, strong. I know I do. Like I said, I feel better than ever. My body is in sync with my circadian clock. I will sleep exactly 9 hours a night and wake up fully aware. It's awesome.

If anyone is interested, you can pick up the book "The Warrior Diet" by Ori Hofmekler. It's a great read, easy to understand, and will change your life.

tl;dr I lost weight lol

This sounds viable for someone trying to lose weight, but not someone trying to gain muscle mass or strength.

Props for being proactive about your weight loss, and not just giving up because a diet or two didn't work.

I'm still a big subscriber of the 5 small meals and a gallon of water a day plus cardio and weight lifting to smash your unwanted lbs. Get your metabolism going faster than Carl Lewis.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 13,2009 12:39pm
thought this was serious... DRINK MEAD PUSSIES.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 13,2009 12:42pm
Actually, eating 5 meals a day activates the parasympathatetic response 5 times a day. That's 5 times that you're telling your body to slow your metabolism and relax.

I kind of glossed over it, but the Warrior Diet has extensive provisions for gaining muscle mass and strength. I'm not stressing that part yet because I'm not going to be going to the gym until I get back to school in January. If you look up the guy who developed the diet, he's by no means just a thin guy. He's ripped. Seriously, check this out.

Very interested. This sounds pretty close to what I do when I'm in a "let's lose weight" state of mind (or a "shit we're broke this week" one). I do feel like a fucking animal when I'm on one of those kicks, and I kinda like it. I have one of those metabolisms that responds to pretty much anything, though, which is the only reason I'm able to work in IT and not need a scooter to cart my immobile ass around - YMMV.

Makes getting home and smoking a bowl 20X more relaxing/rewarding, too.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 13,2009 12:52pm
Exactly, the night time eating phase is supposed to be relaxing and anything you do will feel ten times more relaxing.

I like Ryan's diet, too. Perhaps a synthesis is in order.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 13,2009 12:54pm
Haha, with the Warrior Diet and if you're getting enough exercise you can have as much beer as you want during the overeating period. It is a lot of carbs though so it won't be good for losing weight.

Nope. If you want though, you can have some small protein snacks or a fruit. You can have organic pure whey, some nuts and seeds. You will go into it with more energy. After the workout, make sure to have a small recovery meal or your big meal for the night.

My metabolism takes care of everything for me. :P But I'm sure the time will come when I can't eat anything and everything anymore. :(

If you want my 2 cents on this topic: exercise.
I don't do any of this diet bullshit other than cutting down on fast-food type stuff.
Exercise is the best for you, no matter what you're eating. Run a few miles and lift weights. I used to be in great shape when I played sports, but now I've got some moobs going on.
I just got a year membership to the Y, which is going to help a lot.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 13,2009 1:43pm
Did you read the first post of this at all?

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 13,2009 1:46pm
Wall of text, like I said. I skimmed through it.

There's no need for me to. What I've done in the past worked for me, so I'm going back to what worked. If it fails, then I'll try this diet nonsense.

I went from weighing 175 in highschool to weighing 235 pounds right now. Keep in mind, I'm just about 6'6'' so I'm not morbidly obese. I plan on exercising and weight training.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Oct 13,2009 1:47pm
Actually, if you'd like to participate seriously we could begin by steering you toward recent articles showing that exercise plays a MUCH SMALLER role in weight loss than we previously believed. It's good for building muschle mass and absolutely CRUCIAL for cardiovascular health, but for moobs it's not the best option. Diet will stimulate metabolism much more than exercise will, faster and more results as well.

Ultimately the best idea is a well proportioned balance of all - Diet, excercise, weight training, and CONSTANT masturbation.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 13,2009 1:48pm
Yea, I'm more concerned about building muscle mass than losing a lot of weight. Ideally, I just want to lose my slight beer gut and moobs. And yea, it involves changing your diet. As far following a diet plan? Like I said, if what I have in mind fails then I'll try.
If it works I'll owe Martin money.

If you're looking to get jacked up, you need the "Holy shit thats a lot of pasta and sausage and meatballs" diet! It's crucial. Carbs, protein, and soylent farts.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 13,2009 1:57pm
My primary focus before gaining muscle mass is getting rid of the love handles and moobs before it gets anyworse.

You know it's bad when you're jogging and your chest is bouncing up and down. At the same time, it's somewhat arousing.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 13,2009 2:00pm
Martins, how much do you weigh? 300+?

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 13,2009 2:01pm
Actually, don't eat soy. Soy is a great source of protein but only in fermented forms where the estrogen levels are lower. Better sources of protein are nuts, meats, and some vegetables. Stubborn fat is caused by elevated estrogen levels. The less estrogen you intake and create, the easier it will be to lose any stubborn fat.

Carbs are great for gaining muscle mass but only in a timed application. After a day or two of high-fat-intake days, a day of high-carb-intake will quickly boost the speed of muscle gain.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 13,2009 2:02pm

I found that starving yourself completely and drinking lots of coffee is the best way to lose weight. Drinking a bunch can help if you stick to not eating anything. If you must eat something keep it down to 500 calories a day. Runs miles, and drink a lot of water and you will look like heman. :-)

That diet sounds like it will work but it seems like it can fuck up your metabolism real good.

I support 5 meals / and regular exercise. If you are eating the right food and follow and workout plan., you will not only feel a whole lot better but you can gain muscle mass depending on how you work out and what you are eating.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 13,2009 4:22pm edited Oct 13,2009 4:22pm
Almost everything you said completely contradicts almost everything else you said. Sure you can starve yourself, if you want to become anorexic or die.

As I said before, eating multiple times a day slows down your metabolism that many times.

everyone has their own tricks for loosing weight. you just need to try things out and see what works for you.

I got tired of being over weight so i replaced a few things in my diet. instead of soda, i drink water, instead of butter, i use that fake stuff and instead of white bread i use wheat bread. little things like that. i also cut out shitty food like pizza and fried food. i usually "cheat" on the weekends. i think it helps that i dont drink and i dont eat meat. come to think of it, i cant believe i got so fat without those two things.

i run 2-4 miles between 4 and 5 days a week and i have lost 40 pounds since may.

seems like if a diet is too good to be true, it is.

if you dont feel like you are working hard, and you are still loosing weight, then most likely you will just gain it all back. key to loosing weight and keeping it off is a matter of changing your life.

you work hard, you get results.

my 2 cents

I agree its cool to see that you're trying something and getting results... just don't get discouraged by weight plateaus and you'll be fine. I've been dieting and getting back into shape myself. I think I was about 290 last year and I'm down to about 230 now and counting.

My diet wouldn't work for everyone but i eat fast food and pizza every day of the week but i've cut out soda and drink lots of water now... I eat cheerios for breakfast, go to school and have whatever i want for lunch than come home and have a small frozen pizza or sandwich for dinner.

As far as exercise I do some cardio every day except for the weekends and on monday wednesday friday I endurance train with resistance.

weight loss happens when you burn more calories than you consume. assuming you fast all day and eat a 1,000-1,200 calorie meal at night you're still going to lose weight.

This I'm not really sure of. I did it last night though because I got home late and I felt fine and feel fine today. I'm pretty sure that the whole detoxification process happens the next day anyway so that should be okay. I can ask someone over at the Warrior Diet forum or search the book's overeating phase section for something on that.
