This movie got rave reviews in the 3d London screening. Apparently it is the most expensive film ever made and is a "huge step" in film making. Thinking about checking it out.. Hopefully the cgi actually does something for me.

Props and puppets>cgi

Only show out of that whole line-up that I could stomach. My little brother would sit glued to the whole damn thing (Rescue Rangers, Ducktales, fucking Goof Troop, Darkwing fucking Duck), but I could only deal with the Gummi Bears (and occasionally a clever Rescue Rangers).

The NES games based on all of the above were, however, universally fucking awesome. LOVED that goddamn Ducktales game, and the RR one was pretty much Super Mario Brothers 2 part 2.

They did a really good job filming this film in 3D. I was watching an interview with james cameron and he was talking about how most 3D movies use it as a gimmick to throw shit at your face. With avatar they use the 3D to actually immerse you in the world and it does a pretty damn good job doing that. He also made a point that soon a lot of movies and games will be made to utilize 3D not to be a gimmick but to actually make the world come out and feel as if you're in it.

Home 3D is coming as Sony, LG, Phillips and others are already testing home 3D products. I can't wait to play the next halo in my living room and actually feel as if i'm there with master chief.

Entertaining, vivid imagery and animation... BUT horrible voice acting, cheesy one liners in the dialogue, the eyes on the aliens look fake, it was a little too predictable and just plain political.
I'd see it again but it's definitely not the greatest movie of all time. It's like watching fern gully with aliens and explosions.

I'd give it a B, but with lots of rewatch value.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Dec 29,2009 4:32pm
One last disappointing thing: no props.

The reason why the lotr movies were awesome is because they went hybrid and combined both cgi and real props. This movie was cgi overload with little to no props involved. CGI is great and all with today's technology, but let us not forget the art of a good fucking prop or costume.

On a serial note, on the note of CGI, I think it should only be used when you can't do without it, which is why I am excited that my nigga Guillermo del torro is doing the Hobbit. His philosophy is to use cgi only for things costumes, puppets, and makeup can't do.

fucking animatronic Smaugs and such.

CGI is part of the reason I hated the new star wars, I mean, ammaright the originals looked way better.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Dec 30,2009 10:37am
CGI has no soul. so much hard work went into making Star Wars look incredible, and 30+ years later it still looks better than a lot of movies. few movies have wowed me with CGI, Jurassic Park, T2 and LOTR to name a few. and an animatronic Smaug would be amazing, but think of the dimension they can bring with some CGI.

Even though the plot is similar it's still at least a 'solid' plot, based of three other relatively successful movies...tried/true if you will...What is so shit about the plot??? Because it's not mind blowingly technical and difficult for all to comprehend? I personally prefer more violence in movies but I blame that on my parents letting me watch Predator over and over when I was 7. haha.

It was so cliche and predictible.
It seriously could have been a kids movie.

Now that it's officially the highest grossing movie of all time..

Instead of investing 300mil to make this movie, why don't they invest that into saving the real rainforests? I'm hoping James Cameron puts some of the money towards that, rather than profit off of unoriginal ideas and exploitation of stuff that really goes on.

A cliche and predictable response.

So are you defending Avatars story? It was ok but was the weakest part of the movie by far.
The point I'm making is visuals do not always constitute a great movie; just like graphics with video games.
Avatar was entertaining but was empty and unoriginal, outside of the animation.

I think society is caught up in a tech/graphics phase right now. People care more about what things look like rather than what things really matter.

In other words, where's the cream filling?

I never said it was most amazing and original story, BUT it was solid (plot lines based off previously tried & true movies) and had enough original elements to keep it entertaining on top of the amazing visuals. I don't see how anyone could find it to be a terrible movie, then again people find something to complain about in everything ever.

blah blah. whiney whine whine.

I do like a great mindfuck of a movie but sometimes it's nice to watch a movie that you're not required to do the equivalent of calculating equations.

Comparable to listening to instrumental music instead of someone who needs someone spewing lyrics all over the place. Also kinda like going to see the same band multiple times. What newew band these days is completely original? None.

...but still effective.

Yep. Like Avatar. Story was good enough but didn't quite make the movie.

I feel like the visuals weren't even that impressive; it's like the whole planet was a mashup of Phantom Menace-era Naboo and the back aisle of a Spencer's Gifts with all the blacklight lamps.
