toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 18,2011 12:59pm
Damn!! 180 lbs by 11 months? Pretty cool looking dog. Looks like A giant ewok had sex with a brown bear.

What a rarity. HONG DONG ftw.
Looking at the AKC guidelines, most of them look nothing like that one. http://www.akc.org/breeds/tibetan_mastiff/photos.cfm

That feathered hair is distinctively 80s though, lol.

i took care of a bull mastiff that was 80 pounds and she was about 8 months old. she was a fucking dinosaur.

Yep. But it totally looks more like an Asian dog breed. I'm assuming the "red" in the name separates it from other Tibetan Mastiffs.

Also, Neapolitan Mastiffs or GTFO

That being said, I'd still take an English Mastiff any day of the week.

good lord. that is one of the scariest pictures i've ever seen.

i want to see it fight it's actual equivalent

I've always found the history of dog breeds to be quite interesting. The Mastiff breeds are all descendants of a once-great but now extinct breed called the Molossus.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molossus_%28dog%29
"Some scholars contend that the Molossus was a dog used by the Ancient Greeks[3] for fighting[4]. They describe it as having a wide, short muzzle and a heavy dewlap (similar to modern Mastiff breeds) that was used to fight tigers, lions, elephants, and men in battle."

Another interesting tidbit on ancient war dogs:
"War dogs were used by the Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Sarmatians, Alans, Slavs, Britons, and the Romans.[1][2] The Molossian 'Canis Molossus' dog of Epirus was the strongest known to the Romans, and was specifically trained for battle.[3] However, when fought against the broad-mouthed, powerful mastiff of Britannia, they were outmatched. The Romans exported many of this breed of mastiff to Rome and then disseminated them over the known world. Often war dogs would be sent into battle with large protective spiked metal collars and coats of mail armor. The Romans had attack formations made entirely of dogs. Native Americans also used dogs, though not on this scale.[citation needed]"

Imagine seeing a battalion of armored mastiffs marching towards you?

I never saw an apricot neopolitan, only the silver version:

which always reminded me of Jabba's Rancor in his dungeon:

And yeah, english mastiffs ftw. Mine at 1yr:

3 years old, 215lbs

Which one of those is this:

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Mar 18,2011 1:50pm
We have 5 males, that's the youngest one, son of the one in my previous post.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 18,2011 1:59pm
older pics, but of my parents' mastiff "Chewy" (named after chewbacca of course) and my old Yorkie puppy "Odin" that I ended up selling.

chewy is pretty skinny for a mastiff. he was only a year and a half or so in these pictures, but he is still kind of skinny. he loves running around outside and getting exercise, way more than any other mastiff i'm aware of. cool story bro.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Mar 18,2011 2:03pm
He looks more like the typical american mastiffs that I've seen, not many wrinkles on his head. Cool that he's energetic, my dogs run for like 5 seconds and then pant heavily for 5 hours.

I love those giant dogs when a friend or relative owns em but goddamn they slobber so much I can only take them in the form of a visit.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Mar 18,2011 2:05pm
you get used to it. I'd take drool over a shedding furball dog any day.

toggletoggle post by Garth Algar at Mar 18,2011 2:06pm
Agreed. Hate the shed

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 18,2011 2:08pm
I always thought he looked like an English Mastiff crossed with a Great Dane. Which could be a possibility.. the breeders live in my town and I'm not sure if they're "top-of-the-line" breeders if you know what I mean.
But he is a great dog. Very docile, very laid back. Everyone that meets him falls in love with him because he's so gentle and quiet.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Mar 18,2011 2:11pm
All gravy then. If you're not gonna be showing him (which is as shitty as the pay-to-play world) or studding him out, then a good temperament is paramount. Our first dog was a mastiff/dane mix, amazing temperament.

I could never get used to those super-wrinkle dogs. Gimme a german shepherd anyday.

toggletoggle post by Spaldino at Mar 18,2011 11:25pm
Kangals.... the dogs with the strongest jaws. more manly than any other dog. they will bite through your BONES.

toggletoggle post by Boozegood at Mar 18,2011 11:40pm
Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff)

This one is a "cool" picture, but I don't think I like it. Bad for the breed depicting them this way in my opinion.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 18,2011 11:51pm
that's a metal looking dog

toggletoggle post by Spaldino at Mar 19,2011 12:04am
