Love this record, though I did, actually, like the original master.

uuuummmmmm, I don't see a problem with that statement

None of those are hardcore bands.

you didn't let me finish.....

uuuummmmmm, I don't see a problem with that statement, besides the hardcore part

genres are subjective now anyways, so what does it really matter

Well yeah I know those bands are all in the same category and make perfect sense with each other but I still think it's important to classify things correctly by genre. It's like going into a library, you would be pissed if you want into the non-fiction section and found a bunch of romance novels when you were looking for a history book, I don't see why this doesn't apply to music.

I think with those three bands specifically, they blend a lot of different styles together, but all three seem to have their basis in hardcore, hence why they get called hardcore all the time

out of curiosity, what genre would you classify those bands under?

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Jan 12,2012 4:43pm
That's what I'm saying, hardcore is a pretty cut and paste genre, while all those bands mash so many more influences together, it doesn't really make sense to lump them into that category.

Converge I would say is metal influenced hardcore, though they have some other stuff as well... hell, you could say they are a quintessential metalcore band, given that what typically gets referred to as metalcore these days is nu-metalcore in the same way that bands like Five Finger Death Punch get called metal by morons... the word needs to be taken back by people who listen to better music.

I don't really see what Botch has to do with hardcore, they aren't a fast band whatsoever from what I remember (I haven't listened to them since I was in high school) but from a riff standpoint they fit in the same category as Converge...

I may be an asshole for posting this in this thread too, but I've never actually listened to Coalesce so I can't even say anything about them.

But the point still stands, the word metalcore needs to be taken back and not seen as sacrilege, nu-metalcore needs to be used for the modern metalcore dreck, and the real metalcore is what I would call these bands.

Completely agree with everything you said....wow, that may be a first.

Metalcore would make the most sense for these bands, but as you said, metalcore has turned into a dirty word because of all the horseshit that gets called metalcore nowadays, and even over the past decade.

It's the same thing with the term "screamo." Bands that came out in the 90s like Majority Rule, Orchid, Pg. 99, etc. are what that term was created for, but nowadays, it's getting used for pussy rock bands that scream every now and then. It's bullshit, son!

I guess I agree with both of you. I don't mind so much that they are grouped together because they have similarities but of course they're not quintessential hardcore bands, imo. Converge more so than the other 2.
Things seem categorized by comparison. What/who was before it, during it, and after it. Everybody has a different idea.

I really don't believe that genres are subjective at all to people who know what they're talking about. Sometimes you have to wait a few years and look back to the past to see what a band is truly doing and where it belongs in the musical spectrum, but most bands can be categorized, and the ones that can't will never be replicated.

I like this sentence.
To me there's a clear difference between, basically speaking, the way metalcore bands played before Killswitch Engage got big and the way bands played after KSE got big. The bands who were established in the 90s just seemed to be putting in a lot more thought to their music.
